Recently found out that my elderly neighbors fell prey to a scam like this. They recently moved to an assisted living place and I had a conversation with their daughter, who was helping with the transition. She said that the scammers got a lot out of them, enough to make a real dent in their retirement. The FBI was involved in trying to track down these guys, but coukdn’t come up with anything.

Their daughter was sad about it, but I was so mad I was seeing red. They should be tracked down to the ends of the earth!

email blackmail attempt

I have a sticky note over all my cameras and don’t use them anyway. Plus, I want royalties if that’s going out on the net!

I love how he asks for $899 like that old retail trick is going to make any difference to whether you actually pay or not.

This guy is in Morocco. My brother, a IT wizard, was quite helpful solving this. It’s a little hack that disguises his email to make it look like yours. The person/persons are pretty terrible hackers. It took my brother less than 10min to get to them.

I say stand down and no worries. Just don’t pay.

Interesting. How did your brother track them down to Morocco?

Even if what was in the email was 100% verifiably true, there's just no way I would ever pay a blackmailer. I'm way too mean, for a start!

First he downloaded a script he wrote onto our hosting server and located a local mirror IP the hacker was using, them he trace it (I’m limited on how to explain this) all the way to the hacker’s local IP address. If he didn’t have bigger fish to fry, he would have spent a day or two working the link until he gained access to the guy’s laptop but he doesn’t hack for a living!

The first thing my brother said was not to forward, manipulate, copy or touch the email. You never know what kind of script is sitting there, waiting to be triggered by your actions, a copy or zip could be enough to launch whatever the hacker codes and he could really gain access to you laptop. He thinks this one is amateurish but still, I’d be cautious.

It’s funny, I thought similarly.

If it was actually sent out, I imagine no one I know would want to see that. Or care. I’d be one of billions people that “peruse” those sites.

Now if it was littlemoi, as she alludes to covering up her lens, that some people might want to see.

I received the same general email and traced it back to a mobile IP in Argentina. It doesn't look like these are all being sent from the same server. I certainly didn't find any hops in Morocco in my message. The Bitcoin wallet number was the same.

It did expose a hole in the DMARC settings on my mail server which I've since patched. I probably never would have noticed had this not ended up in my spam queue.

Good times.

Interesting.

Too late for the advice. I've forwarded the text of it, and taken screenshots of the header, and sent it all to Outlook support. Whether this will result in any positive outcome, I don't know.

HAHA!!! I am of the same opinion. But by the same token, who, in their right mind would want to see me, in that condition?
I had read something about this scam online. And I should imagine that it would be quite un-nerving for the unsuspecting.
Is there anyway to reply to these predators and tell them to F... OFF!

Mine traced back to 201.180.186.80 as the last hop. Telefonica de Argentina. There were no open ports at that IP at the time of the email so I can't go beyond that point.

Others reporting the same email from this Bitcoin wallet show various IP addresses as well. Maybe the person was in Morocco at some point but they seem to be of varying origins or at least onion skinned with halfway decent results.

Here we go again! This just in:

Hello!

I'm a programmer who cracked your email and device a few months ago.
You entered a pass on one of the sites you visited, and I intercepted it.
This is your password from *my email address* on moment of hack: *the same old password*

Of course you can will change it, or already changed it.
But it doesn't matter, my malware updated it every time.

Do not try to contact me or find me, it is impossible (in 'from address' is a random contact).

Through your email, I uploaded malicious code to your Operation System.
I saved all of your contacts with friends, colleagues, relatives and a complete history of visits to the Internet resources.
Also I installed a Trojan on your device and long tome spying for you.

You are not my only victim, I usually lock computers and ask for a ransom.
But I was struck by the sites of intimate content that you often visit.

I am in shock of your fantasies! I've never seen anything like this!

So, when you had fun on piquant sites (you know what I mean!)
I made screenshot with using my program from your camera of yours device.
After that, I combined them to the content of the currently viewed site.

There will be laughter when I send these photos to your contacts!
BUT I'm sure you don't want it.

Therefore, I expect payment from you for my silence.
I think $869 is an acceptable price for it!

Pay via Bitcoin.
My BTC wallet: 1LZQGS99RUCvQvT5Qce7LkrWtMtcXPSdWZ

If you do not know how to do this - enter into Google "how to transfer money to a bitcoin wallet". It is not difficult.
After receiving the specified amount, all your data will be immediately destroyed automatically. My virus will also remove itself from your operating system.

My Trojan have auto alert, after this email is read, I will be know it!

I give you 2 days (48 hours) to make a payment.
If this does not happen - all your contacts will get crazy shots from your dark secret life!
And so that you do not obstruct, your device will be blocked (also after 48 hours)

Do not be silly!
Police or friends won't help you for sure ...

p.s. I can give you advice for the future. Do not enter your passwords on unsafe sites.

I hope for your prudence.
Farewell.

I read and article, a while back, explaining that some of these hacks are publicly shared on hacker forums and users tap into them and try to exploit the various techniques taught.

I once had my webcam hacked while I was sitting at my desk naked and doing “private” things.

The hacker sent me $869 if I promised to cover it with electrical tape.
