Hi, I'm a new Submariner owner and a recently retired NYC attorney. I have a few collectible watches, mostly Japanese and American, the oldest a 1908 Hamilton railroad-grade pocket watch that's still deadly accurate. But my only other Swiss watch is a Christopher Ward Trident GMT. I bought it partly because it's 38 mm in diameter, and most dive and GMT watches (especially from Japan), seem to be following a trend of getting bigger and bigger. I have a 6 1/2" wrist, and a big watch looks ridiculous on me.

The Trident is very pretty, and it has a ceramic bezel that combines the markings of a dive watch and a GMT watch. But it was designed to be waterproof to 2000 feet. I thought that would be a good thing, but it resulted in a case that's way too heavy and sticks up nearly 15 mm. The watch also has a raised trident design on the back that's uncomfortable in day-to-day wear. So I decided a Submariner, which hasn't followed the trend to huge watches and is more comfortable, would be a nice change. (And to be honest, I've lusted after one since I was 13).

I wanted an earlier Sub, so I recently got a 1983 16800 from Bob's Watches. I sold a vintage Blancpain on eBay once, but the buyer came to my office to look at it, then brought it to his watchmaker to guarantee it was genuine. Something like that would be even more necessary for a Submariner bought from an unknown person, and there are many false claims about condition. So I decided to buy from a well-respected dealer after asking a bunch of questions here about the watch I was considering.

I was told an intro should include a picture of my watch, so here it is (including someone who insisted on being in the photo, although she has no interest in watches). I hate gaudy designs, and the slim case of the original Sub appealed to me, along with the flat black dial of these earlier watches. But this was the first Sub with the high-beat movement and the sapphire crystal, so it's modern in the areas I care about. The condition is like new, and it's running extremely well. Ahh! Another railroad-watch guy! Mine is a Hamilton 940 from 1908. I haven't worn it regularly in years, but it hangs in my kitchen, functioning as an additional wall clock.
