Out of curiosity, why don't you consider the modern recent 5227R ?

Seriously looking forward to the 5320G this year. Going to take a 20khit just to own it. Thats how much i like it :)
I've been thinking about the 5320 a lot myself as it looks awesome, but since I don't own a perpetual PP yet I think I should get a 5327 that has a 240Q movement before one that has a 324SQ movement. I really don't know yet. Perhaps some PP purists can comment about the movement differences between the two perpetual calendar watches.

Hey Ben,

It came down to a few things
1) The 5196 is a 7.6mm vs the 5227 at 9.24 mmm
2) the dial curves at the end which i really enjoyed ( you can see this in the angled pics). It gives the dial ao much character despite it being minimalist.
3) also i like the small seconds...
4) didnt need the date window.
5) manual wind- really wanted the manual wind for this

Given the thiness, i couldnt have a display case, it would have been nice to have the officer case back but the 5196 movement is so small it would look weird anyhowZ

Fantastic watch.

I'm torn between the 5196 J and R.

Did you consider the J at all?

My J is waiting for me in the AD to pick up in July.
I really like all the metals, for me 5196 is the quintessential traditional watch and that makes me gravitate towards YG as the most traditional metal.

Can't go wrong with 5196 in any metal. Yellow gold nice for the opaline white dial, really catches the light.

I have been looking for a 5196J or R for a few weeks now. Somehow none of the ADs in HK have one. However, a few shops still had the discontinued 5119g and 5116r in stock. Does anyone have a view on the 5119 vs. 5196? I find 5196 the bezel to be beautiful and the roman numerals more classic vs. the 5196, but I'm concerned it might be too flashy for what's supposed to be an understated dress watch

I recently saw a 5196R at the Patek Salon in London and I have seen G, J, R and even the P (which is the rarest of 5196) in several London ADs. I prefer the 5196 over the 5119 as 5196 is similar to the original reference 96.

Sadly it did cross my mind. Would take too big a hit. My wife surprised me with it and paid msrp right before jlc had the price decrease....

Your posts coupled with the article Fat Ninja posted about how the predecessor, the 96 saved PP.

The J seemed more fitting in that sense.

Vs most other dress watches this is by far one of the best... well worth the 4%

Hopefully the lack of 5196 in HK was due to ADs waiting for the price increase. Guess I'll have to hit the TST/Central ADs this weekend.

Sounds like they have cut back on the delivery/inventory of these.

PP probably trying to force new buyers into complications...personally I think it’s the wrong time to force a shift in the market.

I don’t know....

Calatrava just by virtue of their price point are hard to find...last year when I bought my 5296G I called more than 30 ADs and it wasn’t until I found one in Seattle that actually had one in stock. While most ADs will discount calatrava, they’re still hard to get because of the low price.

The 5296 was getting discontinued that’s probably why. But the 5196 isn’t a discontinued model
