6006G (Amazing value for the finer details, Calatrava Cross buckle & 240 Microrotor with a little off the cuff dial for Patek)

or

5227R or G - simply classic, versatile and the officers case back as mentioned above beautiful.

I don't own one but if I would get a Calatrava it would be a 5153G-012 London 2015 edition or a 5196P

I have the 5196j and the 5127g. I use the 5196 for dressier occasions, but it can be worn anytime. The 5127g is elegant perfection to me. The crown guards make it appear more solid and it is very unassuming in white gold.

I have a blue alligator strap on order from ABP for the 5127. This will make it great for that "country club" casual look with a sport-coat and jeans.

I view the 5196 as a classically-designed modern dress watch.

Also consider the 5227.

Very nice.

Love all the watches & everyone contributing to my questions, many thanks! I have some research to do, its lovely seeing TRF members have good taste and appreciate other fine watches outside of Rolex.

Agree with this - the new Calatravas are too big. Unless you have really large wrists, most look like dinner plates.

If no date, then any of the 5196 variants.

If date, then any of the 5227g dial variants.

Unless I'm missing something, that's the pickle I find with Calatrava right now. The 5296 was in good spot (at least price wise) between these two. Right now, it's a big jump from the 5196 to the 5227.

I used to have a 5296G which I loved....but foolishly sold. (Why did I do that?) Now I go through days when I want a Calatrava again, but feel limited by the options.

5196, no question about it.
It is a watch that was classic decades back, it is a classic today, and will still be a classic few decades down the line. Classic but not 'conservative' or dull.

Choice of metal is up to you.
I had the YG version and it looked great, Plat version is even better.
And the PP pin buckle is just a beauty.

Anyone own a Calatrava that could give me some wisdom on these watches & which model you would recommend for a starter Calatrava? are older Calatrava models that are manual just as good as the modern pieces! what do these things cost at an AD? are they impossible to get?
The 5117 reference has been discontinued for over 10 years. So if you really like it, you will need to find it pre-owned. It is more difficult to shop for pre-owned, because a lot of times, you won't be able to try it on, unless you find the watch at a local store.

Before getting your first Patek Calatrava, ask yourself a few questions:
1) Automatic or manual wind?
2) Clear case back or solid case back or Hunter case back?
3) Date or no date?
4) Smooth case bezel vs hobnail bezel?
5) Tang buckle or deployant clasp?
6) YG, RG, WG, Plat or SS?
7) Seconds hand or no seconds hand?

Otherwise when shopping for a pre-owned watch, always be aware that the watch may need a servicing and that not everything may be original (e.g. Tang buckle). Also box and papers may be important for some.

Enjoy your watch shopping experience

There is no substitute to the 5196r. Preparing an unboxing video, here’s a preview :)

Are the 3940, 5140 and 5327 considered calatravas?

Curveball- wanted a Patek dress watch but already had Langes, an FPJ, a UJ and a day-date. And other Pateks (5164R, 5070R, 5905P) None of the Calatravas added much - then I found this.
