First Patek Advice

Hi Everyone,

I currently do not own a Patek but want to start adding the brand to my
Collection. With no purchase history at any Patek store, what would be a great model to get as an entry level watch that’s actually available. I really like the aquanaut but honestly don’t even want to try and get laughed out of the store with zero Patek purchase history.

I'm in the same situation. I'm not really a dress watch guy, I don't wear suits ever but I have my eye on the 5212A, nice looking watch and in steel.. could that be a first Patek and then go from there to Aquanaut (any model) or am I dreaming here..? I'm in Europe, I own AP, Rolex and Omega watches.

Depends if you have a relationship and purchase history with a Patek AD... Doesn't have to be Patek watches, but any history (ideally in six figures) would certainly help you.

If you don't have purchase history, then getting 5212A or any Aquanaut is going to be VERY VERY difficult. The 5212A is in very high demand, and so are the Aquanauts.

Yeah, Aquanaut is highly unlikely as a first purchase... If you want one now, go grey, if you want one at MSRP, built a relationship with your local Patek AD.

Unless you’re gonna be a huge spender and wanna build a relationship with the AD, if not for a one and only, I’d got gray

5212 is going to be quite tough to get... perhaps even as hard to get as the Aquanaut.

For the OP, realistically without a waitlist or purchase history it would either be from the calatrava line like a 5196 or 5227 to start. If you want to stretch a bit more then perhaps an annual calendar.

No purchase history in this AD because the other brands they sell don't really interest me: Panerai, Tag Heuer, Robert Dubuix, Glashutte etc.

A bit weird question, but which watch would you were, AP Royal Oak Chrono or steel Rolex Daytona when you go to ask for your first Patek?

It all depends where you are - 5212A is sitting in Patek Paris Salon (or at least was sitting yesterday). I can imagine this model is very popular in the DACH region since they use weeks when conducting business.

Best advice is to visit a couple Patek ADs and try on a few watches and see what you like. Don't follow the hype and get a watch you will enjoy wearing.

perhaps you should wait until April, when PP release thier new models.
there is expectations that they will release Calatravas this year, and who knows some could be little sporty steel ones like the 6007 and 5212

Was recently in the same position, as in only last week I purchased my first PP and went for the 5172g which is absolutely stunning. Any photos do not do this piece justice. I’m not sure if it was because I was wearing all green or not but my dealer who I also purchase Rolex from pulled out the 5168g green for me as well. I thought I would like that more having always wanted an aquanaut but the 5172g is without doubt my favourite.

I am on the fabled" list" for " any steel PP sports watch. AQ or Naut. Bracelet or strap. Complicated or plain Jane. I have an extensive history with my AD on other items in the store. Been on the damn list for 6 years. Nothing. So 2 weeks ago I said to hell with it and bought a 5227g. Then decided to buy a 5524g. I mentioned this to my AD abd he had one in 3 days. I told him that I was buying the 5227 to build a relationship. He said not to do that it did not matter. So I replied that I had been waiting for 6 years for any sport watch but I would have to buy the 5227 just to have any PP. Hopefully this will help me innly search for a steel sport PP without paying 4x retail.

I looked at entry level PP myself and settled on these 2 examples. I have traded the 5227 and kept the 5524g. Are You a gold or stainless guy? The WG calatrava has a spirty look in WG which I personally like. I strongly reccomend that you look at the Calatrave Pilot Travel Time as a first Patek if you can spend around 50k. You can get a 5-10% discount if u negotiate. I got over 20% off retail on the 5227g. The discount will vary according to the
model you select. Try to buy something from floor stock or something within the network if AD has multiple locations. If this is a relationship building buy you just have to balance your choice between what the AD has and what you like. I def recvomend something in the Calatrava product line for uour first PP. Good luck

Prices have become kind of absurd.

My first one was a 5167, then I moved to the 5711. Before the craziness started.

After a while I sold both and bought the 5146 and 5230, before the full blown craziness unfortunately but I did clean up in a way.

The hype was too much for me, and I let the desired PPs go to get a couple of "real" PP.

OP, I’d speak to your AD, don’t settle without even trying. Regardless of what you hear on public forums, it’s unlikely for you get an Aqua but it does happen.

Hope you get what you want.

I think to be fair these are all “real” PP’s.
