Incoming 1680 Red

This happened today! Big thanks to Springer for connecting me with the Red Submariner I’ve always yearned for.

He got a collection in and I had a hard time picking from a 5513, DRSD and this. I’ve chased and missed several Red Subs over the last few years.

Mark 6 dial, Mark 3 insert, tritium hands. An honest one without any casework. I really wanted the dome without cyclops. He and Ralph made that happen, too.

Thanks to all of you who keep posting watch photos and enabling me.

Enjoy your "Red" Grant - it definitely is one of the nicest original examples that I have come across in quite a while.

Super work! That looks great.

I personally enjoy a cyclops with a date window, but each to his own.

Thank you! The piece came with 2 other genuine Rolex crystals, with cyclops! So the option is there whenever the mood strikes.

Nice looking! Silly question, why do so many of the older subs have the cyclops removed?

It’s a personal choice. The dome (plastic) crystal can be used rather than the (plastic) crystal which includes the cyclops. My eyesight is such that I can see the date wheel perfectly without a cyclops; but with a cyclops the date is blurry.

Plus, I think it looks awesome with the dome crystal and no cyclops. This one came with 2 extra crystals that have a cyclops, so I can change it back anytime, easily. We all have different opinions on the look, the correctness of a watch, etc.

Thank you, Brian! I am pretty fortunate to enjoy these lovely watches! Your Panerai haunts me to this day (in a good way). I look once in a while and it keeps going up. Only one available… Such a beautiful watch. I just know I can’t pull it off, psychologically. Looks so good on you!

Beautiful, congrats. I hope to get one one day too. It’s just tough to know where to start, with all the mods and fakes out there.

Yes, I understand the concern! I wanted to buy from a trusted seller with a lot of experience in vintage.

With these high value watches, i think the key is to hook up with a real trusted pro ( like the OP did with JP) or with one of the trusted vintage rolex dealers out there. I guess we all have our favourites

As you say, there is too much money at stake now to go blundering off on ones own if you dont have the encyclopaedic knowledge required

Very much agree. If you're not a leading expert in the (mine)field, pay the premium for somebody who is. Gotta pay to play.
