Does this make sense

I have an opportunity to buy a 5270P from an AD at MSRP.

The watch preowned is 20k less than a new watch.

Does it make sense to buy the new watch for the difference?

Thoughts?

It makes sense if you can get a popular nautilus / aquanaut after that purchase.

Try to get some discount on 5270p. And yes, relationship is important with an AD.

Very little in the watch world seems to make sense.

20k is 20k

How important is to have your name on the papers?

How likely is that you will tire of it and resell it down the road? Won’t matter if you bought it new or oreowned.

You could buy a 5196 for the difference.

+1 this, but only if you want both watches. Otherwise, no brainer to save the 20K IMHO.

Yep OP pay attention to Doc Stu.20 grand is a bunch of money. You gain very little by buying from AD IMO. If they won’t assure that you will get a hard to get piece wi a certain period of time or a substantial discount - forget them! You are giving them 20,000 dollars if you buy from them ! Wish you the best.:-)) james in San Antonio Texas

You can get a 5270p brand new for more than 20k off msrp. Shop around.

20K on such a watch not worth it. You should absolutely get the new watch from an AD, who'd hopefully sell you something hard to get as a gratitude.

Or fly to Europe and buy it at a reputable AD there, after detax in likelihood you'd save that much anyways, even with the weak dollar (or should i call it strong euro?)

Make a deal, bundle with Nautilus or Aquanaut at the same time not later.

Howdy uniqueMR,

I tend to agree with you, and I tend to be loyal to a couple (sorry for being non- monogamous) of ADs.

If I remember correctly you just bought a 5205R and a 5905R from an AD (i did the same). May I ask you if you were instantly rewarded with a rare and hard to get additional timepiece? or they gave you hope?

I was given "hope." I shrugged it off.

20K might sound like a lot of difference between AD and 2nd hand in terms of saving.
however the piece of mind that i will get from breaking the seal, having my name on the certificate of origin and building relationship with my AD is worth it
PCC is a grand complication, and i would like to know that i am the first person to operate it and that it haven't been abused be someone else

Question about de-tax at Europe.

I read that if you de-tax at Paris now, the US Custom will be notified so they will know that you are coming in with a high value item. And worse if you live in California as the State Tax Franchise board is now linked with US Custom so anything triggered a custom tax will also get you a CA sales tax bill.

The US custom to California sales tax bit I know is true as there is bill passed quite a few years back but did not get implemented until last couple of years. A friend bought a watch from an auction in Geneva and received a CA sales tax bill a few months later.

But anyone know if de-tax in Europe (especially Paris) will make your purchase known to US Custom?

If the AD can provide a firm delivery date for the rare piece and he/she has your trust, I would go for it. But if it is a maybe, I will pass.

Fair what you say. I trust the good intentions of a couple of my ADs but they could not deliver. Not their fault. Some have done other (totally unexpected) favors for me which I sincerely appreciated (e.g. hosting a trip to Lake Como/ Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este).

Even my horse enjoyed it.

Glad your horse enjoyed it because being one of the largest ADs globally, I only ever received a box of pastry from The Hour Glass. The rest of the gifts from them were re-packaged but were from Patek (Patek traveler cases, loupes, Patek books, scarf, and a tie).

I would have loved a sponsored trip to Lake Como.

Ichiran, my pardner, you have the blue watches. I live vicariously through you.

I used to be a kid at the rodeo visiting the Hour Glass. I had bought from them and Sincere.

I remember when I used to travel to Singapore regularly, buying fancy watches, and then having fish head curry at Banana Leaf (??) Loved the contrast.
