I'd go for a sub date, my favorite is the 2004 1610LV black dial/green bezel combination. I got an unused one a while ago & think it's got a look that will never date.

New to TRF, so hello all, and glad to join this community.
I wanted to reply to this post as I was in the same position myself a few months back, buying my 1st Rolex. After some deliberation and research I chose to go with the Submariner 16610LV. I chose it for a few reasons: Sub is an iconic watch, perhaps THE iconic Rolex. The LV had the maxi dial, which looked nicer to me. I loved the green colour of the bezel insert. Good luck with your purchase. |

My first was a Sub no date back in 2002. Originally chose it over the date Sub due to price but now I really like the clean, classic look without the date. Either of the Subs would stand the test of time.

Of your choices, I would recommend the Sub. Timeless, elegant, and works with any occasion. The GV isn't bad and it certainly is gorgeous; but I would go with a more classic look that has been there for a long time. The Sub is perfect and very very functional. Which brings me to my next point... Justin, a fellow member from the TRF community has helped me with my decision. He mentioned that the Sub date vs. Sub no date often get consideration from the perspective of symmetry. I was thinking that the watch was often debated as being too-busy with the date, but he mentioned that some people like the symmetry that the ND provides. Even considering the lack of symmetry, I still prefer the sub date. It looks great, clear, and the cyclops magnification is great. If you have any doubt and are not 100% dead-set on the sub no date, you may end up regretting not having the date there. Ultimately, you need to go and wear them all. I would wear them in the following order while I ask myself what do I think of the look and feel of this watch. 1) Sub ND 2) Sub date 3) GV 4) Sub date 5) Sub ND 6) Sub date 7) GV And end it there...by the end, you should know which one feels right, if symmetry matters, if one feels too busy, and so on... Best of luck with the decision!!! Hope you post pics here once you get it!! -kev btw...I loved this: I think he is spot on. If you like them all the same, why not!? The only thing is I think it is really hard to like them all equally. I think people (generally) gravitate a bit more to one or the other. :) |

Milgauss
The Sub date will always be there, and is the epitome of Rolex. Be different and get a unique piece. Go for the mille. Very clean fail and comfortable..

A nice Sub Date, as mentioned, it's a keeper for sure.
However, if I was twenty years younger, I think I'd go for the Milgauss GV. |

I was in a similar boat, on Monday I made the choice.
116400 The white Mille arrived yesterday and I went to bed wearing it. My first new Rolex. What blew me away was the relative small size of the bracelet. I'm glad I chose the Milgauss, I had no hesitation removing the plastic protective pieces. I love the plain face and the stunning second hand. The only Rolex with a less conventional second hand on what otherwise is an uncomplicated, unadorned watch. Yes, most seem to go for the GV and the black dial, so I chose white. PS. I like orange! and celebrating my 100th post. |

Hello, I am new to The Rolex Forums, thank you for having me here.
I own the Milgauss GV and love it. The green crystal and odd seconds hand really set off the watch and to me, hint that there is something special inside... The Faraday cage is amazing, not that I have physically seen it however. Given that the watch was developed for use at CERN, I would say it's built to "work" in most any situation. I would say most any, as I wouldn't recommend working out or yard work in it (polished oyster) but that's just me... I wear mine daily and have yet to "damage" the watch. You will pick up the normal usage marks but that's a part of ownership (thanks to the many posters here who have remarked positively on wearing and not keeping a "safe" watch). I can say that the watch is tough; I dropped it on the deck at work from waist height and not a problem. I will note that the drop was due to a loose screw on the bracelet. I purchased new and the AD did NOT correctly secure the screw when they sized it for me (I would have known to check this had I researched a bit more). The AD corrected the matter but, the watch could have been badly damaged, you know? (I wonder if they would have covered damage had the crystal shattered or the mechanism stopped?) I am and have been completely satisfied with my purchase. Again, I will note that you should ensure the AD uses the appropriate locking solution on the screw if the bracelet is adjusted... To echo others here, "Get the one that speaks to you". Either way, you will not be disappointed. Milgauss GV For me: Green = USMC Lightning Bolt = Personality Faraday Cage = Handy in my civilian profession Respectfully, truchadee |

I have and enjoy both my Sub date and Milgauss. They are both worn equally in my rotation. If I could only keep one it would be the Sub.

Despite purchasing a GV as my first Rolex, I'd probably recommend the sub as the first for most people. It's a classic with a well earned good reputation.
That being said, I see subs everywhere at my office. I work in my company's sales dept (though as an analyst not a salesperson) and you'd swear that subs were some type of required dress code here. All of the salespeople at the management level and above seem to wear one of the many variations. There are a few DJs mixed in, but not many. I'm sure I'll pick up a sub at some point (more likely a subesque GMTIIc actually), I just wanted something a little different. The GV fits that bill nicely.

I actually had the Milgauss, but am currenty going to trade to the SubC LV all green. Just a few more days of waiting!!!!
So GO for the SubC 116610, especially if it is your first Rolex. I also have the GMT-Master IIC 116710. I really like green on watches. I bought the Milgauss because I felt that it was more conservative and less bold of a watch. Mistake. I am a bold person, so I should have known. If your a bold person who sets himself apart from others than I would go for the SubC LV All green. |
