Besides a being a bit more cost prohibitive, I just think the dial on the 5196 strikes a better balance. In my eyes, the 5227 just seems to have a lot of open/empty space on the bottom half of the dial. Speaking of dials.....

I've seen/tried on the 5196 in the past and I do vaguely remember the dial to have a more silvered and vertically textured dial than most of the pics you find on the web and the stock photo on PP's own site.

I would simply go to my AD but the particular piece is actually not in the showcase yet and would be coming straight from Patek. So no chance to see it live at the moment.

If any owners of the 5196 in any metal (as I believe they all share the same dial) would be so kind to post and share pics of the watch & dial, I would love some encouragement
Would love to see it in different angles, light, etc to really get a true sense of the dial. And of course, any enabling notes from ownership welcomed!

Thanks as always to this great community.
The 5196 is a true classic and tried and true. Perfect size and proportions.

However.... the 5227 while not as widely accepted as a true classic (yet); has a few notable upgrades that you would pay for. I am a big fan of these features.

1) Automatic movement
2) Date window
3) Officer caseback AND display caseback (this is a great feature if you're paying $15-$25k for a watch; being able to appreciate the movement is awesome)
4) Sensuous curves and case flanks
5) Slightly larger case size at 39mm (pro for some and con for others)
6) Amazing dial color (eggshell)

Going to have to agree with this assessment. Picked up a 5227G about two weeks ago and i prefer it to the 5196.

Yeah, agree with all your points here. Especially #3...with this much $$$ I too think you should be able to appreciate/see where all that money is going to!

As a Ref 5227 owner I have not seen a better summary as described above. With that said the 5196 is awesome. I struggled back and forth between the two before moving to the 5227.

5) (and 6)) killed the 5227 when I was after a basic Patek dress watch. It felt far too large on my 6.6 inch wrists with its large empty dial. Even the 5196s looked quite large on me but they are certainly beautiful watches. My sweet spot for simple dress pieces is 35-36mm - in the end I got a little 34mm 3998P. Sounds tiny but its dial is similar in size to my 5711.

The 5227 is great. (3) and (6) are my favorite things about it. The officer caseback really is special. That alone may make it worth its price. Not a fan of (2) and (5). The white date wheel clashes with the eggshell dial in my eyes.

I’d buy a 5196 + 5227 hybrid: 5196 dial and case shape/size with automatic movement and officer case back. Unfortunately Patek do not make a small seconds movement in automatic.

I really like how clean and elegant that dial looks
I’m in the same boat trying to decide which calatrava. With 7.6” wrist, leaning forward towards the larger (39mm) 5227

Basically, a 5296 with an officers back. Would be very cool. But yeah no small seconds if automatic, good point.
