Are any of you graduates of an Ivy League school?

Have any of you graduated from one of the following Ivy League schools: Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, Cornell?

Do you feel the level of education has helped your careers? Does anyone feel it has had little to no effect?

Lulz.

I’ve heard of the Ivy League but I’m too stoopid. I had to settle for small liberal arts and Big 10 for law school.

Yes, and it's similar to going to a reputable non-Ivy (stanford, MIT, caltech, university of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, etc.)

and GPA/major still matter. I'd rather have a 3.8 GPA in engineering from any reputable state school than a 3.2 in sociology at Harvard. Because with a 3.2 in a soft major at Harvard, Goldman Sachs and McKinsey aren't hiring me, nor will grad or professional schools be impressed.

Nope. State school here. Not enough family money or brain power to go Ivy League. The girls are hotter at state schools anyway.

Sociology major here.

Non Ivy League.

Worked out okay.

And a brilliant, most charming, McKinsey alumni recently bought majority share of my business.

Seth, I didn't mean to disparage the field of sociology. My point was that employers (at least the ones who hire fresh grads) look at what the students did in college, not just where they went. And some majors (like STEM) are especially employable.

Another problem Ivies have seen is grade inflation. Average is about 3.4 at Penn, 3.5 at Harvard, 3.6 at Brown these days.

And while I'm not sure a job at Goldman or McKinsey should be any 18 year old's goal in life, my point was that while these prestigious and high paying employers do recruit at Ivies and other top colleges, GPA cutoffs tend to be pretty high and so they're not hiring the average student

Of course, the further someone progresses in their career, the more the importance of college diminishes. The main benefit I see of attending an Ivy these days is to get a good first job and build a network -- from there, it's up to the individual

My man, no offense taken.

Everything you say is 100% accurate.

Hell no. Quarter mill + for undergrad? I went to a state school and spent the difference on grass booze bimmers and food.

I went to public schools pretty much all the way throughout. I know a lot of folks who did the private route, and several who Ivied. We all ended up in the same sandbox but I don’t think it’s fair to judge any route taken and a lot of variables to be calculated before making a decision on which route is best.

Nope.

In medicine, graduating from an Ivy League (or similar caliber) school keeps certain doors and career paths open; i.e. academic medicine or research at a prestigious academic med center. IMO, it makes those paths easier to navigate.

Good for you Eddie. I lasted a week at LaGuardia. Their proximity to neighboring strip clubs impeded my ability to make it to class.

Yes, I did receive my education at Ivy League universities. I think there are more opportunities available for certain fields like finance and law. The pedigree is less important in medicine.

I didn't do well in the traditional college setting. I tried 4 brick and mortar colleges and went back to school only after I had been promoted at work and got an AAS degree in fire science and BA In Fire Science Administration. I actually graduated after I was already in charge of my job and had just suffered what would be a career ending injury. I wasn't ready to learn when I originally went. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go Ivy League because I'd have a specific goal in mind and a plan to achieve it. I have many friends who have gone that route and have become very successful. It all comes down to determination and dedication. The networking and name recognition do carry a lot of weight from what I've seen.

Nope. Private University that costs more than most Ivy League schools though.

Actually just paid my loans off this week.

Seems dropping out of an Ivy League U. makes for a wealthy future, too.

Mark & Bill would approve.
