1957 Submariner

Good morning all,

The 6536 1 is not a model of which I have seen many examples in the metal. This one was brought in to my colleagues on Saturday.

Consistent with a number of my records, it has a 3067xx case number with III.57 case-back and 1030 calibre movement, the movement itself being numbered within the range of others in the relevant batch of a thousand or so watches.

The watch has six service marks from Rolex London on the interior :-)

Bezel wear at 6 and 12 is fantastic and reminds me of contemporary Milgauss bezel wear.

With kind regards to all,

Haywood Milton, UK

It took six months and in the meantime the owner tried his hand selling this 6536/1 at auction, but I am delighted to say that yesterday afternoon he finally sold it to me and was, at last, happy with the price!

It joins a 5508 and some other Subs from that era in my shoe-box, so it won't feel too old sitting next to some of the modern, 1970s pieces :-)

Any more 6536 owners on the forum? It might be especially nice to see some more of the early bezels, without hash-marks to 15.

With kind regards,

Haywood Milton

Great pick up... you must have been relieved when it didn't sell at auction--what happened, reserve too high?

Here is my 6205 with its original bezel insert that does not have the hash-marks to 15. The simplicity of the very early Subs is something very special. Stunning 6536 examples guys.

Thankyou for all your kind posts. Yes, I was relieved when it didn't sell at auction, in part because the reserve was set at the level of my original offer so if it had sold at that the vendor (a nice chap) would have been worse off after the deduction of seller's fees.
The process was perhaps brought about because a local Rolex agent had rather over-stated what he could expect for the watch, but all is well that ends well : the auction demonstrated what a good offer was!
Thankyou to those who posted pics of their own, early Submariners - beauties all.
With kind regards,
