Vacheron's new challenger to the 5711 / Nautilus..?

Dropped by my AD who couldn't wait to show off his latest delivery.. the brand new Vacheron Overseas ultra-thin. Have to say I'm very, very tempted..

White gold instead of steel. No date, no second hand. Pure simplicity. A few immediate impressions: I) You can definitely spot the white gold sparkle relative to SS. II) it feels ALOT heavier than the 5711.. given its gold perhaps I should not have been surprised, but it really stood out to me. III) the bracelet is gorgeous, but a lot wider & thicker than I expected vs both the 5711 and 15202. IV) the case didn't feel ultra thin; about as wide as the 5711 I was wearing today.

Only issue.. It's 2x the price of the 5711. I'm sure that will put most in the Nautilus camp, though by the same token, that makes this Vacheron all the more exclusive and special when you see it out and about.

Would be eager to hear what others think.. (will reply to this post with 2 other photos as for some reason my phone can only upload one at a time!)

It is nice however 5711 is a 5711 and the clear winner

Stainless steel vs precious metal is not a fair comparison, try against the 5711g or better still the 5711r as its on a bracelet. Either way I think the 5711 wins.

Maybe it's the lighting but the dial looks very wash out. Anyway, the new VC ultra-slim is a nice watch but imo does not compare to the 5711 or the 15202 in terms of physical appeal and rich iconic heritage.

I think this is a $ 55 000 watch so 5711 wins by a mile!! I do like the idea of interchangeable straps but to be frank the VC is a bit of a yawn...sorry!

I like the new VC ultra thin watches, they did a nice job on them. I would still go with the PP, 55K opens up a lot of doors in the watch world.

While it's a lovely time piece, with that price tag it's hopeless I'm afraid. For cca. half the price you can get the same movement in a much nicer package and much greater heritage: AP Royal Oak 15202ST. If it has to be an Overseas, then I'd rather save up a bit more and get the Overseas Ultra-Thin Perpetual. That watch is stunning, has no equivalent (competitor) in Patek's lineup, and it also has got a much more interesting dial and complication.

Tough to tell in the plastic wrap - I feel it's a strong watch from the hodinkee article pics etc but the price is very high. I think it's boutique only which means at full price it's a pass to me

I think the VC is nice but as the name has fallen quite some way behind PP and AP and now Lange too, I think this needs to be priced far more competitively to sell well or distract sales from those brands.

Nice alternative provided by VC. However, at that price point there's just too many other options available.

VC would have to make a SS version very competitively priced to be able to lure away would be 5711 buyers.

Not a bad piece and I am not a flipper but in my decision I would have to factor in resale and VC just does not have the demand like other high end brands so it would be an easy pass for me. The perpetual is cool but damn expensive

Exactly my thoughts, and the movement is even more a yawn than the rest of the watch... If ever you do really want one, wait for them to arrive on the preowned market, they'll probably have the classic huge VC price drop and you'll save a ton...

Of course it looks very similar to its brother:

The new VC rotor looks stunning, but the skeletonized rotor AP uses reveals a lot more of the movement.

I like the new overseas collection and think VC are going in the right direction.

As mentioned, i think the new ultra thin is really quite pricey...although to be fair on same level as 5711R and 16202OR.

My favorite is the world time actually...

The WT has by far the nicest movement to look at, all the other VCO have quite boring movements IMO

Don't love it though it seems very well-made. Vacheron used the same hands for the three handers (both ultra-thin and regular model) and the chronograph model. The hands are too long on the three-hand models, they go past the markers. Just a strange design decision. I also don't love the idea of a watch built around a theme of the brands logo - the maltese cross. Just an uninspired design to me. It would be like if Patek designed a sports watch around the Calatrava cross.

I'm not a huge fan of that vacheron. But, I would love it if my 5711 could go from bracelet to rubber to leather with that quick change system it has

Can not come to terms with all those crevices in the bezel.

VC is nice, I really tried to get into it, but the design aesthetic just doesn't do it for me.
Doesn't compare in my opinion.
5711 clear winner PM or not.

Indeed. I like the dial as well (although it is quite busy).

For business travel it in theory is a great watch. Bracelet/rubber for plane, leather/braclet for work, and bracelet/rubber for casual.

Looking forward to seeing it in person :)

200% of the price of a 5711 now and may be .75% of the price of a 5711 in 5 years?
