Is it stupid having a 5711 and 5712 in a 5 watch collection?
Hi guys,
So I wanted to know what you think, I have an AP CE Diver, a 5712, a 5167R that I just need to pick up in Davos when I can (2-4 weeks) I am on a spot on the list for a 5711 which I should get after Christmas, and a watch from an independent coming in June, that will make 5, for those who read the daytona thread I decided to pass, it will break my rule of 2 watches per year max, and will break the other rule of no more than 5 in the collection for the next 2 years, so I will use my AP as a "light beater"... I know they are very close, but even if I prefer the 5712 I love the 5711, and the dial permits the light to play on the color much more, and some pics of it are just magnificent, as well as some 5712 pics, unfortunately not mine as I take crappy pics. I considered the 15202, which I find really nice, but to be honest I just prefer the bracelet, movement is nice as well, when I see both of them next to the other on a pic I always prefer the PP, and one of my rules is get what you prefer, don't go for diversity, I tried that by getting the 5726 on strap because had the 5712 on bracelet, and it didn't work out. The watch is ordered, I do plan to get it, but just wanted to know your thoughts about this kind of things, I mean Roger, aka Conkers, just got 3 variations of the 5270, ok one of which is with diamonds, but still, I find that great, but he has way more watches than me. Do you think that in a small 5 piece collection as mine will be very soon it is stupid to have both pieces or not? Of course if ever PP was to release a great Nautilus in SS for the 40th, not in PM, I might take it over the 5711, but basically it would need to be extra thin, have a complication I like, there aren't so many, and a really cool color, preferably blue but others are possible. For those who have small collections (3-7) with 2 or 3 very close watches, would love to see some pics and know if you wear them all in a normal rotation or if some are rarely worn. Thanks guys |

I'll be interested in hearing others opinions as I'm considering a 5712 while already having a 5711 and 5167 in a 5 watch collection.
Sometimes I think it's too much, too similar but then on the other hand if I like it then get it. What I would be concerned about is if one of them (5711 or 5712) suddenly became second best and not get worn. |

Yes it is redundant.
I have a 5711-r and the 5712 SS. I think that makes enough sense to keep both around. I personally would not have both in SS

Out of the 5711 and 5167 I actually wear the aquanaut more, it's a great all rounder whereas for me anyway the 5711 is a slightly more dressy watch with the pcl's. |

From a practical standpoint, even with a 5 watch collection, I think it is difficult to wear all of them regularly. I had a 4 watch collection for many years and I only wore 1 or 2 regularly and the others did not get any wrist time.
I know in the Rolex section, many people own the GMT, Sub, SD, etc. They are quite similar to one another and I don't know how many people rotate their watches. I think it is natural to have one or two favorites among a collection of 4-5 watches. |

I've had both, and feel that for me personally, it's a bit redundant if your intention is to wear them in rotation. However, if you're looking to complete a collection of sorts, it wouldn't matter. There's no practical application that applies...
For what it's worth, the 5711 is my preferred daily and as I recall, I wear it far more than my 5712 when I owned it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have 3700-001, 3700-011, 5711-010, 3712/1A, 5712/1A and 5980/1A and there's not even one Nautilus too many.

If you have a 5712 the 5711 is redundant ,like with cars when you got an M3 on your doorway you don t need a 328i too.strictly imho

It's not redundant if you think you'll wear it, but if you'll always wear the 5712 in preference to it then I'd pass. Your AP and 5167 you would probably wear on different occasions, but if you're going to wear a 5712 or 5711 would you ever choose the 5711?

Yes this is how I would do it, both in SS are too similar for me unless I had 10 watches. However I know you have tried on many watches Arnaud so I think this is probably the best solution for you. If you didn't get the 5711 what would be the main contenders?

I am already finding the 5167 too similar to my 5711 and may be on Chrono24 soon!! I wear dress watches daily and u the reverse so it may get more wrist time. I never even thought of a nautilus until the 5711 arrived and have to say it gets a lot of wrist time

You have to get what you like to wear. Only keep the pieces that evoke emotion! Now to that blue dial.......very hard to resist!

I have a 5712 and a 5711, alongside a 5167 (plus a 5726). Of the four, I wear the 5712 the most and if I could only keep one, it would the be the 5712. I think the 5712 and 5711 are sufficiently different to sit alongside each other in any collection.

Arnaud, I have the 5711 and I'm considering the 5712. I am waiting to see the 5712 in SS but I do think both in the same metal is redundant. You can always get the 5711 and flip pretty easily if you don't like it.

If I was in your position I might be thinking 5711R over 5711A.

Very nice, do you wear the 5167 much? I guess due to the composite strap (Presume its the non bracelet version) its kind of the daily / beater in your collection (though I hate that beater term if referring to PP but guess you can be more care free with it)

+ 1 nice combo with more variation.
I see he is going for a gold Aqua also, therefore for a trio (if I had the funds lol) I would prob go 5712, 5711R and Aqua Traveltime to mix it all up with basic dial, cool 5712 complications and the Aqua 5164 for travel. |

I think it is redundant as well
A bit leftfield but how about a Roger Dubuis or another brand? Something a bit different in your collection |

I don't see the 5711 getting much wear time in your case so buy then flip for a few bucks or maybe offer to a friend who really wants one. You have a Special Piece on order and the 5712 is your all time favorite and you also have a nice RG option on Rubber waiting for pickup and the Ceramic diver to beat around. Plenty of variety between Leather, Rubber, and Bracelet options as well as different case materials. I prefer quality over quantity so I would not tie up another 20K in a piece that may not get much usage. Just my 2cents.
