modern Daytonas only make sense in PM....

UN-popular opinion, but its mine, and this is a discussion forum:

the PM Daytonas are to me, the only (modern) Daytonas that make the most sense:
dainty (not a big watch by any standard, and rather slim)
pretty (all the glitter of the many hands and dials)
luxury feel (PM)
jewelry (overall feel as an object)

the SS on the other hand as a ' Sports ' watch is terrible at its original intent of supplying you with a legible time and a useful chronograph function, and no precious feel.

What say you?

That's not an unpopular opinion; it's an 'makes no sense' opinion.

By that reasoning all stainless steel watches make no sense.

I’m a vintage/modern Daytona fan and would actually like to see Rolex add different movements to the case design like a perpetual calendar or even an annual calendar.

Makes sense to me. The Daytona to me is either a piece of jewelry or an instagram flex piece. As a chrono watch, there are better out there for cheaper.

I actually agree with you.

- No date
- barely legible
- Weak lume
- No flyback
- Have to unscrew chronograph crowns in order to use while plenty of other brands don't have the requirements to unscrew chronograph pushers

Nah, not my experience. I am on my fourth SS Daytona since 2000, all gens except the newest 12 series. One man’s dainty is another’s super comfortable fit. The 4130 powered ones have been the most accurate mechanical watches I’ve ever had and I can tell the time on them without grabbing the readers.
I may not use the chronograph function much but I happen to like the “busy” look of a tri-compax chrono, if I need it it’s there.
PM watches just aren’t my style or budget although the latest SS prices certainly aren’t cheap anymore. I’m old and secure enough in my own skin to acknowledge the hype factor but the reason I have bought them is because they are great everyday watches. The PM ones might be more blingy but they still retain the useful function I have described. If you don’t like them that’s fine, you can save your money for something else.

I love PM and tbh, after wearing them for so long, I would have a hard time going back to a SS watch

I can't say I agree, but the full PM Daytona does mix elegant/sporty and the stainless is pure sport with the ceramic bezel.

There are of course two tones which lean to more elegant, and oysterflex models which lean towards more sport

Something for everybody!!

Rolex mostly produces the modern Daytona in gold. Less than 25% of Daytonas are in steel.

11 series was released in 2013, it wasn’t until 2016 they released it in stainless. Stainless comes in at a lower price point, hence driving demand for Daytonas across the board.

I do prefer my everose chocolate dial to
my panda, but it’s not the only option.

I personally don’t like any Daytona reference. Never have and probably never will.
I will say this, the best Rolex metal is SS.

“Elegant sporty” is an oxymoron! I tolerate the SS, because it’s attractive, and had I been the lucky winner of the recent giveaway, would have worn it proudly. The PM ones make no sense to me, and the ones adorned with precious stones, even less. They are simply jewelry. As for chronometers in general, give me a Speedy Pro, please.

I have 2 PM Daytonas. I still am going to get a steel one. This whole thing makes no sense. I’m not reading this thread anymore.

okay, get out your flamethrowers, but my opinion is that neither the ss or pm daytonas fill their intended purpose from a value/chronograph perspective, but that’s not why we love them/covet them.

Look at secondary market websites like C24. It’s a decent proxy.

Nope. Don't want one and have never asked for one. I have a PM root beer, a fifty fathoms, and a JLC Extreme Lab 2. Way better choices than the Daytona .

I love my SS white dial Daytona as much as my Blue dial WG Daytona but the SS is more comfortable to wear due to weight of the WG

I always thought 11 series Daytonas arrived in 2000 with the 4130 mvmt
