I have a couple of vintage watches, the oldest, this one is 61 years old and still going strong! With proper maintainence and the mantra "thou shalt not get it wet"!! it will out live me!! Hmm, I suppose I should get round to having kids so I can leave it to someone!!

This is the '46 cal 30.10 RA bumper movement, there is a little wear on the movement but it is cosmetic. this particualr movement is a little delicate so this watch goes on tour on sunny days! It does keep excellent time though, loses about a minute a week! Hope I can say the same of myself when I am 60!!:)))

That's a great refurbishment job and I think the money was well spent.

I have a circa 1984-5 Submariner that was hardly ever used; worn maybe 10-20 times while going out to dinner, stuff like that. My dad bought it for me for my birthday one year when I was doing underwater salvage, but I wasn't going to trash it in that environment with all the hammers flying and slimy wreck snot. For that I had a cheapo $40 Casio that had functioned to 210 feet, so why trash the Rolex?

Problem was that when I went to pull out the watch after having not used it for a number of years, the hands were corroded and snagging on each other. I took it into a dealer, who said that it was caused by corrosion from a worn out/deteriorated seal. So my question is this ....... if this watch was hardly ever used and suffers that much from sitting in a drawer, how could anyone rely on the damn thing in a salt water environment? If seen hydraulic seals last longer than that in much heavier usage. Now they want $730 to replace two hands and certify the unit.

What gives? The jeweler says that the movement is in perfect condition but if this is what owning a Rolex is about, I'll forgo the marginal status elevation and use it for target practice. What a ripoff.

Congrats on a fine family heirloom! I have an SD that is now 30 years old, running fine with 3 services, and I anticipate handing it off to my oldest son, who is a US NAVY LT SUBMARINER! Get all the stories you can from your Dad. As they say, it will be priceless!

RLXGMT-1675what a lovely GMT and well done on having it so sympathetically refurbished. The star of this thread for me though, is Mike's Red Sub which served in Vietnam. That history, with it's beauty and accuracy mean that Mike should NEVER invite me round to his house!
