Thanks for the feedback

I decided to buy the 5712 at this point in journey. I have Rolexes for the GMT functionality. So the iconic look of the 12 won me over. Thanks again.

5712 is such an under rated gem...I feel like it's finally being discovered lately.

I prefer the 5990, the dial layout on the 5712 never really appealed to me personally, but certainly understand why folks like it. I just like a little more symmetry in my dials (probably why I'm just a boring number cruncher ).

Good choice, congratulations. I prefer the 12. Very comfortable watch to wear and beautiful dial color. Enjoy it to the max

I felt similarly and had always leaned toward symmetric dials. I never quite "got" the asymmetric 5712 until I actually got one. Now ... I get it! Sometimes perfection requires a flaw. ;-)

I own both but if only 1-- 5990. I like the GMT function for travel. But both are great choices

Went through this same thought process recently and went for the 5990 after trying both on. Now just have the long wait for it to arrive!!

The 5712 is a stunner though, and that lack of symmetry on the dial is awesome!

Two very different watches, but can't go wrong with either.

While the 5712 is more beautiful in my opinion, I like the 5990. I think it really depends on the individual. For me, the 5712 wears small on the wrist. I really like the heft of the 5990, the functions and ultimately how it wears on MY wrist. If you're looking for beauty, and like a thinner profile, for sure go with the 5712. On a sunny day you won't be able to take your eyes off of it!

Great choice! You will enjoy the 5712 even more when it's on your wrist!

Seems to me that everyone who owns both, prefers in the long term the 5990, is that true and why? Is it because the wrist size and feel or practicality as far as complications? I ordered the 5990 myself because I felt it was the better deal as far as the price compared the price increase of the 5712..

Personally, I'm not a fan of either.

It appears that this forum loves the 5712 but I just don't feel the love... the dial seems poorly balanced... missing hour markers (lop sided too), Patek name weirdly to the right, different circle sizes.... it's just a weird looking watch to me. The 5990 would by my clear choice... although I'd choose the 5740 without any hesitation!

I have the pleasure of owning both timepieces and would suggest that there is no bad choice between the 5712/1A and the 5990/1A.

The 5712/1A is certainly an interesting piece and has a unique elegance of its own.

The 5990/1A has in my view been generally historically mischaracterised on this forum as being unduly thick and therefore unwearable. Nothing could be further from the truth; it wears rather well and is a highly versatile piece with very useful and functional complications. Whilst I was keen on the complications, when the time came I was a little nervous to add the piece to my collection and conferred with tyler1980 who has been (and was then) a large advocate for the piece and who has some fantastic IG photos of it. As soon as I was able to see the piece in person, all of my concerns were removed and today, after some time of ownership, I wonder if it is not my favourite steel Nautilus!

In light of that, if I were to only have one, at this point it would be the 5990/1A.

I have both and I prefer the 5712. Depends on what you want out of the piece - the 5990 is a sportier piece with more useful complications, while the 5712 is more elegant and "romantic" in my view. Also, as someone with smaller wrists, the 5990 is not egregiously big (wears much like a Sub) but still on the larger end for me to choose with with full business attire, but the 5712 just seems to disappear and melt onto my wrists.

i prefer the 5990. To me its just more versatile. If i was wearing a suit every day i might think otherwise but travel time + chronograph + more wrist presence in a more modern sports watch way its unbeatable. There isnt really a situation where you cant pull off that watch.

I do think my 5712 is my most beautiful watch no question but to me its beauty limits the ways in which i wear it. It might not make sense to some but i like to keep it more of a special occasion watch and not a daily.

Complications have nothing to do with my preference... I mean, who really cares about the moon phase or uses a Patek as a stop watch? As for travel time, I dislike seeing two hour hands and can easily add or subtract XX hours from the local time using my eyes. Complications (to me) are an appreciation of the extra work that goes into designing and producing them, as well as the unique dial layouts that result. The factory tour opened my eyes even further in that regard.

The 5990 face has more depth due to the thicker case which makes it more pleasing to me. The size and dial color give it a more masculine presence. The 5712 is a pretty watch though.

5712. 5990 is a chunky one but awesome still, I would just prefer the 5712.

Both are beautiful...but when I tried on the 5712, it felt too light on me. I want to feel the weight of the watch of this caliber on my wrist.

My wrist is the same size and i own both.. They both fit well but the 5712 is thiner and can definitely feel the difference when wearing. I had kind of lost interest in the 5712 for a while but more recently started to appreciate it again. I am torn if i had to pick one or the other.. Both are great choices. I do travel often but when i am traveling overseas when calculating back to home time zone gets a bit more difficult to quickly calculate, I tend to wear my 5164 because it is thiner and lighter. My point is I do not wear the 5990 as a functional GMT watch but then again when do i really need to know the moon phase.

The 5990 is all around a better feature set, but imagine it with the blue dial of the 5712...

Owned the 5712 and sold it - now own the 5990 - far prefer the chunkiness/presence of this model as well as the complications which are more practical to me. I do like the 5712, but pick the 5990 by a wide margin in this comparison.
