Thoughts and Personal experiences with STEINHART watches?

Hey-

In addition to the research I've been doing, how are Steinhart watches? Besides the obvious inspiration from Rolex...are they good, strong watches? How's the feel, movement and engineering?

Any help or information would be helpful.

Thanks

Never played with one but have heard good quality for the money on other boards.

They are very durable in my experience. I have 2, both for about a year. I love them. Very affordable for what you get in my opinion. Never had any service issues with them.

No real issues with them the build quality seems to be pretty good, I sold mine the week I purchased it because I couldn't live with the faux patina and I didn't care for the bracelet on the ocean one military. JMHO YMMV

Ahhhh so you couldn't stomach the fakness of the piece? You must own an authentic Rolex?

I own more than 10 Rolex, and see nothing fake about the Steinhart. It's personal preference. Some may not like them. I do. It's a nice watch that I get compliments on and that makes me happy to wear. If others do not like it, that is fine. But no need to run it down to others who may enjoy it.

Only a matter of time before Rolex destroys them in court...
Been waiting for the gavel to drop on them for awhile.
Otherwise clearly more than "inspired" by old and current Rolex
Models.

Any legal issues they have with Rolex have no bearing on my like or dislike for this watch. If it bothers you don't buy it. OPs question was about Steinhart watches, not the company's legal dealings with Rolex. I'm just trying to give him an idea of the watches themselves. If the similar look to Rolex bothers you, again, don't buy them.

Solid watches with above average fit and finish. Swiss ETA or Sellita movements. Which model are you interested in?

I enjoy my Steinhart. It's a great generic diver. Decent quality for the money and pretty accurate. Yes, I have many Rolexes and high end watches to choose from but once in a while it's nice to wear something without care.

I originally got it for my teenage son but he prefers his plastic Swatch Sistem watch over this at the moment so I'm keeping it for him.

I had this OVM, it was great. Felt solid, looked cool and tough. ETA 2824 is a good workhorse movement, so no complaints there either.

I sold it to a friend because when it came to wrist time I never chose it over the Rolexes in my collection. But now it's on my friend's wrist every day, so all is well.

And Rolex got their Sub design from someone else, so what?

I had the same watch a couple of years back. Overall it was nice watch, definitely worth the cost. Also ended up selling it for the same reasons.

FWIW, just posted this five minutes ago on another thread:

I own a Rolex and just got a Steinhart dive watch that I'm very happy with. 85% of the quality of a Rolex at 4% of the price. Waterproof to 100M, Swiss-made, ETA movement at 8 steps a second just like my Rolex. The 39mm size fits my 6.5" wrist perfectly, 40mm is borderline too big for me. Steinhart can offer a pretty high quality watch due to modern CNC machining, and of course not having to spend millions on advertising, retail stores, or celebrity endorsement contracts.

I doubt I'll have to have any "No, it isn't a Rolex" conversations, I've worn my Rolex for several years and haven't gotten one comment on it.

Yes, it is sort of a copy, but there is speculation whether Rolex originated the dive watch. If the patent on a drug runs out and you can get the same generic drug for a fraction of the cost, are you going to complain it's just a copy?

I have been looking at Steinhart for some time, as well. I don't see a problem with them since most of them are homages to models that you can't get anymore, at least not without spending significant amounts of money. And even then, there is zero assurance of water resistance and eventually parts supply will run dry... I particularly like the new Ocean 39 Explorer and Ocean 39 Explorer Plexi, as you won't find a Rolex Sub with that dial for less than a few hundred thousand.

I've only heard good things about their quality. Squale does some good homage pieces, as well, but they're a "legitimate" watch company with history going back to case making in the 60s for some major brands which is why the probably get a pass from a lot of people. The majority of Steinhart's pieces are homages; so what? Again, if you can't afford the real thing, it's a great alternative, I think.

I think it’s a solid watch, not afraid of damage and works well.

Here we are four years after your post and Steinhart is still going strong. What exactly would Rolex sue them over, is there an active design patent on their diver watch or something?

They used Mercedes hands and a pepsi bezel.

that is indeed a very nice looking watch. steinhart is actually a well-built swiss watch and not the average cheaply made rolex look-a-like.

taking offence at lower priced but high quality watches resembling expensive versions is a double-edged sword. on one hand it's negatively viewed as unimaginative and blatant copycatting while an alternative viewpoint is high quality watches with similar pleasing styles of expensive watches are a great value and quite useful.

don't get me wrong i like rolex just fine but we should be realistic. some of the technical and material features that rolex extols may look nifty in the spec sheet but in real life don't come into play at all. they are noteworthy but the price difference is staggering. similar looking watches with good solid stainless steel construction and reliable swiss movements can be had for a fraction of that cost. it's all about enjoying what's on the wrist. i can easily enjoy a steinhart for what it is as well as a rolex.

There was a manufacturing tie with Grovana, Steinhart and Robert watches.

I think this has changed with Company acquisitions.

I have one of each, have had no mechanical issues and enjoy wearing them.

I particularly like my Grovana.

Built like a tank with a really nicely designed bracelet.

An update on my new Steinhart, my 24-hour accuracy check shows it -2 seconds. I wish my Rolex DJ was that good.

Very well said, I also have and enjoy both, and wonder too about some of the Rolex features. My wife has a new Rolex DJ with the vaunted 904L steel, and the PCLs scratch very easily. Has anyone ever had a watch fail because it was 'only' 316L steel and not 904L?

I'd be interested in knowing what it costs Rolex to manufacture a watch, I would think the new CNC machining has eliminated a lot of hand work. I was reading the Christopher Ward website (another maker of top-notch mechanical watches at reasonable prices) who said they mark up their parts 3X, but other Swiss makers mark up some parts 34X.

Here is my new Steinhart with green bezel, about 1/30th the cost of a similar Rolex. It is no more unethical to buy this than to use generic drugs at a fraction of the cost.

I like the 39mm size on my 6.5" wrist (granted these photos make the watch look bigger than real life), the 40mms are borderline too big on me. I doubt Rolex will ever come out with a diver in 39mm, smaller makers can more easily innovate.
