Unless you are only using it for diving, I would go date. Since 99.9 % of Sub owners don't dive, including me, date it is....

I prefer the date. Just used to seeing the cyclops on my Sub(s) over the past decade or so and I like having the date on my GADA watch.

Date sub is great, I also really like the no date, I do agree that it’s a cleaner look.
It’s purely a personal preference here. Can’t go wrong with either. Date is helpful throughout the course of the day when you are signing and dating things at the office with a quick look at the hand versus pulling out your phone and looking at the date. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I love both, but between the two I would choose DATE. I'm in the smaller group that actually loves the cyclops. The date feature is useful to me as well.

Bought my 5513 in 1970. My wife bought me the 1675 in 1976. As soon as I put the watch with the date on, I was hooked. I must have a "hole" in my brain regarding the date but I look for it ten times a day. I treated myself to a new Rolex last year but the Milgauss, Explorer, Air-King and Sub ND were not even in the running. To me the date is a complication as essential as a steering wheel on a car.

I've tossed and turned with this decision, and even considered the SD4K but it doesn't sit well on me. What about removing the cyclops?

I can recall a discussion I had with a London AD over the cyclops, to have or to have not.
The final answer from the AD was: “but surely a Rolex without a cyclops is not a Rolex!”. I nearly fell out of the chair! |

For a collection, the Sub. As an only watch, the Sub Date.

If I was going to have only one - which I now do - it has to be with no date. However, over the years I have actually come to love the Cyclops. It gives a real distinctiveness to the Rolex brand.
Cheers, Carl

Just because I and many others like the Submariner, does not make the Submariner Date second choice. It is a personal preference. Since you are having difficulty with your choice go to a store and try both the Submariner and the Submariner Date on. Whichever one you select you will like and enjoy. Later on down the pike, should you be so inclined you may add on the other.

No date does not exist. Submariner and Submariner Date. Before buying you should first know what you buy and what it is called

For me... The date is such an essential function. I use it constantly and it feels weird not having it.

After having both, I have to say I prefer the date. I'm constantly looking at my watches for the date and miss it on the models I have that don't display it.

I know the no date Sub is hard to get, but they exist :) The purist in me wants to call the Sub that lacks a date by its proper name. But doing so confuses everyone. Even an AD I’m friends with asked me if I got “my No Date Sub.” |

My first Rolex (1996) was a no-date Sub. Even in the BC years (before Computers) I had calendars, secretaries and staff so I got used to a no date watch quickly. The look was mesmerizing and it flew a bit more under the radar; only the two other Rolex wearers even noticed it. I have since grown to love the date version but the minimalist look was perfect for me. If the date is a must, I highly recommend the SD4K if you can find one. The date is almost unnoticeable but is there if you need it (and have good eyesight). Today the date is simply ubiquitous; we all have smartphones, iPads, appliance clocks, car clocks, smart televisions, etc. When all else fails, just yell out and some smart device will tell you...
