Dilemma - Rolex or Patek

Hi all fellow members,

I like to share my current watch collection situation and hope to seek feed backs and advice what would be the way forward if you were in my shoes.

I have both White and black ceramic daytona, Hulk and Batman. I love Rolex watches, more specifically Rolex sports watches. I am eyeing to get the Pepsi and is on several wait list for one.

I am not sure if i should continue to acquire Rolex sports model which I really like a lot or gather my resources and go for my first Patek like 5711 (assuming i can get them).

My dilemma is I don't fancy Patek watches, Rolex watches surely looks much better imo. However every serious watch collector seems to suggest Patek is the final destination.

Your feed backs would be much appreciated. Thank you

Patek is certainly grail level, IMHO. But, I wouldn’t get one just to have a Patek. I think moving to a Patek is a natural progression though. I now have two, a 5726/1a and 5712r. Both are great watches but not nearly as robust as a Rolex thus they get WAY less wrist time. These particular Pateks are scratch magnets!

I own one Patek (Calatrava) and used to have a Nautilus. My wife owns a 24. I have 5 Rolex watches and my wife has one. The Pateks are beautiful watches. However, my experience is that all 3 of the Pateks have required much more frequent and far more costly service than all of the 6 Rolex watches combined. Nine to twelve months has been the average repair time and some of the repair costs have been several thousand dollars. I am gentle on watches. My wife is not.

My experiences are not statistically meaningful except to me. I will never even consider another Patek. I find they are beautiful and high maintenance. If you buy a Patek, I hope you have a far better experience than I have.

Pateks are nice, yet please only consider their vintage models. Was a Patek collector for many years, but quality and service has suffered over the past 10 or so years and does not look to be getting any better.

If you truly want something incredibly well made high-end, then you need to get F. P. Journe as they're one of the true kings nowadays.

Always buy what you love not what people think is a more prestigious watch. I personally love the styling of Rolex rather than PP. but if nothing left to get in the Rolex line, might as well start chipping away at PP.

Buy what you like, plain and simple.

I don't like the design much of the 5711.
They also don't feel in the hand anywhere close to the price tag.
If I would ever buy one it would be for the name and that is tempting but silly in the same time.

I'd probably get a Grand Seiko instead, equally nice finished but why not first try a PM Rolex sports watch ?
That's really a step up

Buy what you like, not what other collectors say. When it comes to 5711, try it before you decide if you have such possibility, because for me it was the biggest disappointment I've ever experienced looking at a watch. Maybe because hype is so big, but I would never ever pay even retail price for it.

Absolutely. The 5711 is not a watch that is for everyone. I love it - but have several good friends that aren’t fans for various reasons. Mostly the bracelet.

You should definitely not get the Patek if you don't fancy them... but you also asked what we would do in your shoes and if it were me, I'd definitely get a Patek because you have so many SS Rolex sports models.. to me its repetitive to have so many and would rather diversify

Why would you even consider a Patek if you don’t really fancy any of them or the brand. Absolutely makes no sense

And a 5711 - you will be waiting forever to get one of these even with a dealer relationship based on your Rolexes (if they stock Patek?). 10 years+ these days?

Without relationship, I don’t think you can even put your name down

no brainer if you find 5711 at retail, but no way to pay the grey premium

The Nautilus is not for everyone. I love it even before this craze. If you don’t fancy it then don’t get it. Too much money and hassle trying to get the 5711.

Is this a serious question? Surely you would only buy what you like? Buying for the sake of it just seems bizarre.

Ask the pontiff AC3
He will be able to help on your decision
He sold 3 SS Stunners to get one PP

To me ROLEX is king

I wouldn't buy a Patek for vanity. I did it once a long time ago and regretted it.

Congrats on the great Rolex collection! I was a bit like you and thought there was something missing because I didn't have a Patek, even though I wasn't particularly attracted to them. I picked up a few and found them to be completely underwhelming. And they didn't seem to have a comfortable fit in my young active life. I don't miss them at all but tastes change so I can't rule them out once I'm less active and the kids are out of the house.

Has only both Daytona C's, LV and a BLNR, and is looking for a BLRO......When this accounts for all of one's pieces I don't get the idea that they're really into watches.

Don't want to be a total downer but I was thinking the exact same. He bought ALL the hyped watches.

Have had numerous examples of each:

Rolex: Built like a brick xxxxhouse. Have used all models from Sub to Day Date in sports, car repair etc.
Classic looks (I love the classic bezel).
No metal bracelet is more comfortable than the President.
RSC repairs are excellent and not all that expensive. Many fine independents too.
Ladies at the Dallas RSC are great looking.
Complications are generally easy to read (ex Daytona).

Patek: Beautiful finishing. A step above Rolex which is excellent.
Complications are tiny and hard to read for older eyes.
Need servicing much more often than Rolex in my experience.
Service is expensive and locations are few and far between.
