Vacheron Constantin Overseas Blue vs Black?

Hey all. Seriously considering a VC Overseas (NON chronograph). Honestly it's been a "grail" for me for quite a while now. Something about it really speaks to me.

Question however is dial color. Now, I don't expect anyone to be able to tell me which one I should like better, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen these two in person and if there are any aspects of these dial colors that stood out? I had the black one on in a shop in Vegas and it was beautiful but I've never seen the blue in person. Some pics look like electric blue, others look almost black. I wouldn't be buying with resale or "value" in mind - I want what I want.

For reference, I have a blue dialed Cartier, a rhodium Yachtmaster and then a couple of black dialed Panerai but those are more of a "matte" color and not the sort of enamel-looking black VC seems to use.

Anyway, always interested in the input available from folks here.

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the words......

I would probably say black out of those 2 options and what you have.

I much prefer the older Gen 2 white dial Overseas though, by far my favorite VC. Better bezel design, and the guilloche dial is awesome, plus the date wheel matches and I like the 4 numerals on the dial.

Thanks. In general I think I'm starting to prefer understated watches and the black might fulfill that a little more than the blue. And I agree on that older white dial - it's a stunner.

Can my vote be for neither? For me, the brown dial is the pick of the litter.

You know, me too actually. Had I made this purchase a year ago it would be the brown one so that's a good call out. I had kind of forgotten about it since they discontinued it. May add that one to the list. Thanks alot.... haha.

I just tried the blue one on in Rome and the black in Venice. I preferred the blue by far. I took pictures of it on my wrist and depending on the angle it looked anywhere from electric blue to navy blue to black.

Get the brown if you can find it either new or gently loved. Otherwise, my vote would be for the blue. It's very dynamic like already mentioned, it can go from a bright blue to a dark blue to an almost black look. The first time I saw it at an AD I thought it was the black dial because of the lighting.

I tried both on in Miami a couple of months ago.
What I thought was both are stunning.
The black dial is more understated but very stealth.
The blue dial sunburst is stunning, you get such a different look depending on the lighting.
But to me it’s the straps where the black wins for me hands down.
The black dial on both rubber and leather go so well and takes the watch to another level.
It’s so versatile being black and having the 3 options, more so than the blue.
I not mad on blue leather so that option would possibly never be worn. And I feel that the blue leather and strap don’t match the dial as well as the black combinations. Hope this helps

Sorry but I am technology challenged apparently. I have the pics on my phone but can’t figure out how to upload them as the site says the files are too big.

That blue dial is nuts. If you've seen the Journe CB it's similar color and dial effect. The black is very nice, but nothing unique going on.

Brown has the same thing going on as the blue, but brown of course. Honestly a hard choice between brown and blue, I went blue since it's my favorite color, but good brown watches are less common to come by than good blue ones -- couldn't go wrong either way.

I’m looking for the blue dial version as well.

Who are the ADs in the US that will discount the watch?

Both dials are nice. So is the brown. If I were you, I'd probably go with brown or blue for something different.

Brown for me. I had to look for it hard this year since discontinued.

But between blue and black, i find the blue more mesmerizing.

I had a chance to buy this in NYC. They said they were the few ADs that had it. I didn’t love it.

Awesome feedback. I really appreciate it.

One other wrinkle has been added over the last 24 hours and that wrinkle is the Rolex Sky Dweller. I’m now also doing the Overseas vs Sky Dweller debate. It literally kept me up for a couple of hours last night. Haha.

I tend to gravitate towards black dial watches and the black in the VC is very strong. With that said, the blue is stunning and could easily work just as well or better. I guess part of my decision making process would be what I already own in the collection and how the VC would fit in. I would also have to consider other purchases/trades that are pending to make sure that I am not repetitive in watch colors or design unless I intentionally want to be. Part of my thoughts would also be the discount offered and what the pre-owned market showed me regarding values with the different dial colors. The VC market is limited and the average collector may appreciate the watches, very few would buy. In the end, the watch that speaks to you is the one to get. In my current collection it would be blue.

Sorry the picture is so bad - but perhaps this will give you an idea how rich the blue on the VC is. It can be almost black, inky blue to an electric blue based on lighting. I love Rolex blue, as you can probably tell, but the VC is a very different color.

Appreciate the input. Leaning toward black mainly due to the additional straps that are included. I know I'd never wear the blue ones but I'd definitely wear the black rubber and maybe even the croc. Still deliberating but the thoughtful responses have been helpful.

Both are superb. There's no wrong choice. They both had truly beautiful lacquered dials when I tried on them.

(There's a rumor that they share the same dial manufacture with F.P. Journe's Chronometre Bleu.)

The deciding factor has to be your clothing style: whether you're a black-clothing guy (Black dial), or a jeans-and-navy blazer guy (Blue dial).

Hmmmmm. Good point. I work from home so I’m totally casual 80% of the time. Mainly polo shirts in the summer and button downs in the brief winter we have here. And I prefer darker colors. Not sure if that says black or blue. Haha.

And yes I’d heard that about the blue dial.

Where I am right now is..... when I look at pics of them online the black speaks to me but I’m wondering if I’d actually prefer the blue if I saw it in person. That’s not really an option at the moment unfortunately.

Or maybe it’s analysis paralysis. :-)
