Is the PO2500 Omega's 5-digit Sub ?

I’m rather thrilled by my new-to-me PO 2500D in 42mm. I received it a month ago and has not left my wrist since. Highly unusual for me these days.

I always found the 1st gen PO classy and elegant, and I much prefer its proportions and appointments to the newer 8500/8900 based POs. Ideally, the LMLE would have been even better, but I can’t really justify the prices being asked for those…

I am a big fan of 5-digit Rolex, pretty much for the same reasons. I own a 5-digit SD and GMT II, and even putting aside current Rolex ADs games and nonsenses, I am not attracted to the newer versions.

What’s the opinion of other Rolex/Omega fans on the PO 2500 ? Do you see it capturing that sweet spot of elegance and functionality to become a classic reference in its own right ? Or will it just become eventually outdated.

I opened a similar thread at the Omega Forum, but curious to see what this somewhat differently biased crowd thinks...

I'd guess outdated because it's not a Rolex.

Still search classifieds daily for my old 2500.

For me the 2254.50 is more in line with a 5 digit sub. Nothing wrong with a PO though.

Here is my 2500D, over 11 years old and still going strong. For six years it was my every day watch, and it has held up beautifully. Still keeps time within spec, the bracelet shows only modest wear marks, the bezel is clean, the case is in excellent shape and the dial legibility is clear.
I wouldn’t use elegant to characterize the Planet Ocean, but this one has been durable, reliable and visually appealing.
Hope you enjoy yours.

The 42mm 2500 PO is still by far the best PO. That’s the only one where Omega got the proportions right IMO.

Great watch. The Submariner comparison is a maybe but I think the PO stands on it's own. The discussion could be had that in a lot of ways it is better than a modern Submariner and that is without taking the price into consideration.

I think you're right. At that time the Omega bracelet was praised and the 2254.50 had a more solid feel than a 5 digit. There used to be many threads and reviews on the internet comparing both.

I hear you re: The Sub. It was not the idea I was trying to convey. The Sub is iconic, full stop. And the reason is that Rolex maintain the models unmolested for many years (decades) and only introduce small changes over time. I don't think Omega has any chance to have any iconic model the way they insist in permanently changing them with every iteration.
The only exception being the Moonwatch, which incidentally, is iconic.

I was more referring to the general charm of the 5-digits and the way their enthusiasts value the classic proportions and restrained looks. In a way, they represent the age when the watches still were more tool than jewellery. And that's the kind of thing I see in the PO2500.

I agree. In terms of both width and height, this was the best one. I see the watch more as a 5-digit Sea-Dweller with the 6-digit bracelet. (The 5-digit Rolexes have really lousy bracelets.) I've had my 42mm 2500 Planet Ocean for over eleven years and it's my everyday casual watch but still looks almost perfect. It's never been serviced and its accuracy is still as superb as the day I got it.

I wear the heck out of my PO 2500. It’s dimensions are perfect for a 600 meter watch. I could do without the HEV but I guess that what makes it Omega.

The PO with the 2500 is far superior to a 5 digit sub. That’s after us owning several. Really it’s not even close.

I have a PO 2500 which I don't wear anymore, as I now find that it's too big and heavy for me. My watch size preference has changed over time.

Thing is, I will never sell it. It's too beautiful.

It has the retro-modern flair before that became popular with the masses. I just wish Omega stayed with the original design and made it in 40mm, thinner and U-shaped end links :D

Agree with this. I consider my 2054.50 to be akin to the 5 digit Submariner.

Agree that It’s on the heavy side. I recently switched my 42mm PO 2500 to the new version of the stitched rubber strap (black with white stitching) on the Omega deployant. Not a perfect fit, so they had to use different spring bars. But it wears like a dream now. I don’t think I’m ever going back to the bracelet.

It’s a classic for sure. Combined vintage design aesthetic with modern build quality and performance. Add an adjustable OEM clasp and it’s basically a perfect watch in my opinion.

I’ve worn mine around the world: hiking the Teton Crest Trail in WY, cage diving with Great white sharks in South Africa and hiking in Patagonia, as pictured below.

I'm a fan of the 2500, and though the 5 digit sub is a classic, I would argue the PO2500 is better in almost every way (including, and especially the bracelet).

I received my 2201.50 in early February and I have also kept it on my wrist since! I have a Rolex GMT- Master II 116710LN and it’s the only Rolex I care to have. I much prefer the MK1 planet ocean to a sub. This is the third omega in my collection and I have had far better performance and reliability than my GMT.

I think this reference will be similar to the 2254.50 in that it will become extremely sought after as the years pass.

Enjoy!!

I wouldn’t be caught dead with a new PO but I absolutely love my PO 2500. The current version of the PO looks like a chubby 2500 that’s trying to hard.

For me personally the 2500 was the best (42mm). I think the case size is perfect. The newer PO's are so damn thick.

Here is my LMPO Limited (2500). Though I love the watch, it doesn't get enough wrist time so I am planning to part with it this spring... hopefully someone gives it a good home!
