Size isn't everything...

I had a good laugh recently, well to myself anyway.

I was at the grocery store picking up a few things... minding my own business, trying to decide which type of mustard I wanted to go with the Bratwurst that I was eyeing for dinner. There was another guy not far from me, when I heard him make some comment to whom I believe was his son who was about 14ish.. I turned to look and noticed they were both looking at me. I asked if I happened to be in their way and offered to move, since I hadn't decided yet.

The father said " No, you're not in my way... I was just noticing how tiny your watch is. " My first reaction was to to get defensive, but then I realized, he was just trying to impress his boy. I was wearing my Seamaster PO Pro, 600mm 232.90.38.20.03.001 This is the smaller 37.5mm reference which I like. I have a Speedy, a 16710 GMT and a 16600 SD which are all considerably larger, but sometimes I like a smaller watch.

I noticed he had a hub cap sized thing on his wrist that was way too big... I asked what he was wearing... it was a Michael Kors 45mm something... which is fine, but he was in no position to be degrading my Omega. I just smiled and looked at his boy and said " Don't believe everything you hear, size isn't everything." and walked away.

People are funny creatures.

i dont find anything creepy about this and would assume everyone involved laughed and enjoyed a little interaction in public.

you did say the young man appeared to be a teen, and boys will be boys, thats just a funny comment that dosent have to be dissected and analyzed too deeply

the world has become much too stuffy, and social interactions are under attack everyday with lockdowns and masks and distance being controlled by mall cops at best or actual law enforcement and harsh penalties and loss of freedom at worst

good for you OP for not giving in to your initial desire to be defensive and instead bringing a little humor into the world

That's just weird. And on top of the weirdness a guy wearing a freaking Michael Kors is giving an Omega owner a hard time??? Puh-leeeze

Those people wouldn't know what it is.

I had this cocky young fella at work try on my $10k PO and he posted it online to get a reaction from his social media 'friends'. No replies. Another day he did it with my $1000 TAG, they all thought he hit that watch jackpot. Hmmmmm

And what the OP said wasn't creepy unless someone's mind is in the gutter. A bloke talking down peoples watch sizes in public is creepy.

I think you handled it well and with restraint after seeing what he was wearing.

Size must matter since a 45mm watch was termed as a “hubcap” in the narrative.

I find it fascinating how much some men care about what other men are wearing. The old adage that the first thing a woman notices about a man is his watch and shoes should be replaced by, “the first thing a man notices about another man is his difference in taste, and this leads to judgement of his character, social status, and evidence to boost his own fragile ego.” I’ve been guilty of this as well; I used to cringe when I saw a lifted truck with giant tires. I’ve learned I often have more in common with most guys in terms of things that actually matter. If a guy is rocking a giant fashion watch but he is a good person, he’s all good in my book. And besides, I’d rather focus my attention on women in yoga pants when I go out nowadays.
