For a EU citizen entering the EU it's more tricky than for the US.best to have proof of purchase with an invoice stating VAT.

If you can't proof that VAT is paid you might have to do so again and import duties as well.
That can easily add up to 30% and if you are real lucky you get a fine on top of that as well.

Not only watches but that also applies for new electronics. Anything in excess over 430 Euro.

Our tax system is quite severe and the custom officials are keen to collect.

My concern as well.

Never had a desire to bring more than 1.

Of those that bring several, I am curious if all are talking about several high end watches?

I sometimes bring an extra watch and lock it in the hotel safe.

I rarely hear about items being stolen from these safes, unless the guest forgot to lock it, or checked out without emptying it.

Another thing I do: keep a watch in luggage, and lock the luggage. Are they going to steal my whole bag? Maybe, but unlikely.

Wouldn’t take three. Too much unnecessary worry.

Just take the one in your wrist and go have a good time. Simples.

Put one of your shoes in the safe, then you won’t forget to empty it on your way out.

The little safes in the hotel room are better than nothing but far from secure. They are fine for electronics and travel documents. The hotel safe at the front desk or office if equipped should be used for significant valuables.
