Knocking sound coming from 16710 when setting the time.

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2006 D series 16710 full set, the watch looks to be in fantastic condition but I have one major problem.

When I unscrew the crown and turn the crown clockwise to wind the watch or set the time you can hear a loud knocking noise as if the movement is loose, there is no knocking noise when moving the crown anti clockwise.

With the knocking noise it does feel as tho the movement is rattling around slightly inside the watch.

I contacted the seller and he assures me that it wasn't doing that when he sent it out, I trust this seller so I guess maybe something happened during postage.

I have attached a short video, you may need to turn the volume up to hear the noise.

Thank you all in advance.https://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5a36618a...507859_s03.mp4

First you should only wind in a clockwise direction only, perhaps the noise you are hearing is the mainspring slipping in the spring barrel when its fully wound.

Yes I would only wind the watch clockwise, but the knocking noise and feeling of a loose movement can only be heard when winding the crown clockwise, I've never experienced anything like this before with any of the other Rolex I own.

It's hard to explain the feeling and sound it makes but the video should be make it clear.

Thanks for the reply.

Rotor might be loose. Take it to a reputable non Rolex watch maker have them open the case and inspect the movement and go from there. It may just need a minor adjustment.

If the movement was loose, you would see it move, nothing in there is independent from the rest.

It is most likely a gear or pinion meshing issue or pivot, if it is as noticeable as you say.

Thank you for the reply, I won't be able to take it to a watchmaker for a few weeks, do you think it would be harmful to set or wear the watch in the meantime?

Hi thanks for the reply, I don't think it's a rotor problem when the crown is fully screwed in the 0 position there is knocking noise, only when winding or setting the time and only got the first millimeter of movement

Also at closer inspection I can see the dial moving ever so slightly.

I've been keeping a close eye on the watch and is keeping perfect time but the dial still comes slightly loose when the crown is unscrewed and rattles when setting the time.

I've no idea what's causing this but I'll take it to a watchmaker first thing after New year.

Here's a wrist shot to brighten up the post.

Merry Christmas to all!

That looks great! I'm sure a good watchmaker will identify the issue for you and that the fix will be quick.

I would not wear a watch with such an issue until it is fixed.

There are two screws that secure the movement/dial to the watch. If it is moving, you have a screw that wasn't tightened properly.

You are being pretty tough on the watch in the video. Kind of an “it hurts when I push here” sort of deal. I would only adjust it clockwise, and more gently. Is it possible the clicking is the jump hour mechanism? Hopefully you got a good enough deal to have it serviced without too much remorse. Good luck!

Looking back on the video I am being a bit rough with it the reason I turned the hands slightly anti clockwise is because I wanted to show that it only makes the clicking noise when adjusting clockwise.

The clicking noise is audible even when winding the watch and setting the minute hand too.

Merry Christmas!

Thank you Springer for the reply, that is most likely the case, do you think it's safe to wear the watch until I get a chance to visit a watchmaker?

Merry Christmas

I hope so I never liked leaving my watch in with a watchmaker for long periods of time.

Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas

If the seller will accept a RSC quote and fix then ok.

If not then I would return it.
