New bond watch...What are they thinking?

http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/2012/1/...s-bond-50.html

Have you guys seen this new "LE" bond watch? Does anyone actually like it? I have always wanted a speedmaster, but over the top commercial tributes like this really make me question Omega's respect to their own brand and history. Thoughts?

Thought Omega had learnt their previous Bond LE lessons.... none of them were popular sellers, were they? :D

I don't understand.........you're not going to buy a Speedmaster because you don't like a special edition Seamaster.......really???? Omega has made plenty of ridiculous looking Bond watches in the past.....why would it suddenly bother you now????

Always bothered me, but this one feels worse than the others...guess you are right that it really does not take away from the great speedmaster itself. Just dislike seeing such a strong brand make poor decisions with products like these...this kind of thing detracts from the entire brand IMO. And Of course they aren't the only ones doing it!

The one thing I never understood is if they are targeting James Bond fans who maybe want to feel a little like bond himself, getting all the ladies and what not, wouldnt they (me included) want the actual watch James Bond wears? Not some terrible 'limited' edidtion Omega with 007 plastered all over it that really has nothing to do with Bond. I dont get who buys these...

Omega needs to stop producing the limited edition watches right away. The Bond watches are the most ridiculous watches I can think of. Who would want 007 on the dial of their watch? This sort of things cheapens the brand, much like AP's ROO of the week.

The Speedmaster Professional is untouchable though, so I would buy it anyway.

They should have left the sight-glass back, and put the rifling bore as the dial. That 007 007 007 stuff looks like designer handbags craving attention. I wouldn't pay a premium for it, but I am not totally against it.

Just like others Bond edition. Looks ok but nothing too special about it.

I too like the case back, but the dial is awful.

I like the caseback and I think it's cool how they highlighted the 50 on the bezel for the anniversary...but that dial is terrible.

But regardless of what we think, they wouldn't pay royalties to 007 and waste time/capital designing and manufacturing these if they didn't think these were going to sell. There's someone out there who wants one...probably a few someones who like their martini shaken--not stirred.

I was about to say the same thing. I would have preferred a simpler dial though.

Cheesy. These types of tacky watches they crank out are one reason Omega wont reach the status of Rolex.

These watches tend to appeal to Bond enthusiasts/collectors as well as the Omega brand appreciators. I might remind you that Rolex(and a good few others) have produced a few questionable designs and logos on their dial as a result of "commercial connections".

I liked the '50', but didn't make the connection. I was wondering why they weren't all red and slightly bigger?

You said it, you can only spit on your own history before it becomes part of it

Man oh man.

I who suddenly thought Omega was back in the game, and forgotten about children's watches!

I understand that a 12 year old might think that's a "killer" watch, but an adult?

Words fail me.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Bond is cool. Infact he's very cool. I love the bond films, specially the old Connery and the new Craig ones.
BUT.
James Bond is a FICTIONAL character! Why make a limited edition watch for a fictional character?

It would take a lot more than this to turn me off from the Speedmaster.

Besides Omega has been making all kinds of LE versions of different watches for the longest time. It's just what they do.

James Bond wore a Rolex, but that of course was before product placement.

That is true. Since Bond is taken Rolex went with the Mission Impossible 4 guys instead.

I think the "007" pattern on the dial takes it over the top for me. The red "50" on the bezel, with just the swirl pattern on the case back, would have been enough.
