Their new movements are beautiful (much nicer looking than Rolex movements) and very advanced. The use of ceramic cases is also very cool. On the other hand, Omega seems to think that it's a good idea to introduce vintage-inspired models. In the end, it makes their collection cluttered and confusing. In 10 years, who knows what Omega will be doing. That could be bad if you invest in Omega watches now.

Thinking about that really makes me appreciate Rolex. They are very conservative with their watches. The Sub, DJ, GMT-Master, Explorer, Day-Date, etc... all look very similar to the original models. Rolex knows what works and they stick to it.
I agree. Subtle changes to a new model like what Rolex does is always a good thing for older models because it holds up their value. Just like what Lexus, Toyota are doing to their car models, very little changes in design every year or so. Not sudden and dramatic changes in outward appearance every year. It helps with its second-hand value of older models.

That new watch is indeed the nicest coming out of Omega in great many years.

I hear a lot about Omega being innovative, but how many of these recent advancements were created in-house? The Co-Axial escapement was invented by George Daniel in 1974, patented in 1980 and I believe Omega bought the rights to it in the 1990-ies and then commercialized by Omega and released in 1999. The Liquid Metal technology is another example of a technology that was bought, not created by Omega product management.

Agree. But we praise Rolex marketing dept for doing a great job, so it's nice to see Omega being competent on that field too. All they need now is a great no-nonsense divers watch to see the color of my money again.

Agreed, they don't need radical changes, they are doing a lot of things right, but then it seems like the Swatch marketing department gets the last say and they just miss the mark, like putting the see-through back on the Planet Ocean dive watch making them too thick, or not releasing a PO diver without the ugly HEV crown at 10 o'clock or avoid the stupid James Bond association, etc. For example, they did a great job with the Ploprof 1200m (although a slightly smaller one wouldn't have hurt).

And hey, I'm far from applauding all the moves from Rolex, they make plenty of odd and head-scratching decisions as well.

Indeed. The most important move by Rolex IMHO is keeping a traditional line of watches with basically the same design over the years. It makes a big difference. You get a Sub now and you will still have a Sub - or at least one that you recognize as such - in many decades ahead. The Speedy is the only exemple of that when you look at the Omega lineup and we can see the effect it has with fans all over the world. They could bring back this Seamaster 300 with a normal dial and brushed links and keep the style over the years. Its never too late to start but once again we will have to wait.

Really really sharp...

Perfect for the 'one watch' guy...

For me...not a one watch guy...
It was the Rolex submariner of the Omega line

Congrats R.J. Looks like the SM300 has a dial with very light "cream" markers. Very nice. Congrats!

Yes it is very sharp...
Not a sandwich dial, but the hour markers are laser etched then filled with luminova
The so called 'fake patina ' is a lot of noise for nothing...
It is a matte dial... Not recreated patina...
It will age well

Good to hear. I agree about the "fake patina" issue; it's just "tan lume" to me. Thanks to patina, we discovered how beautiful tan hour markers and hands can be. Why should tan be off-limits now?

+1... not sure I get the "fake patina" comments on many different watches. It's tan lume!

i really like it but not for $6k. an homage (read: copy) is a copy regardless of who makes it. seems to me like buying one of these for $500 gets you to almost the same place with >$5k left over for an original watch:

how much are the originals going for these days? i have to admit, the new 300 looks really sharp in that pic. still would rather have a lot of different watches for $6k though.

Can't wait to get mine. However, I will have to wait until November-ish. Some retailers will provide a discount, just have to ask!

I don't see why it wouldn't be too different from the 8500 Planet Ocean as far as depreciation.

Per the Omega boutique, US delivery is now delayed until February 2015.

I got the impression that he just tried it on as part of one of the traveling Basel shows.

If he was able to buy one though then that is quite an impressive feat.

THey all seemed confident that november would be the time...
