Would You?

Hi guys,

I’m thinking of getting a gorgeous and desirable new 5146G-010. However, I have a 6 month old calatrava and a recently serviced 2014 5167 Aquanaut.

Would you consolidate and trade for the 5146?
I don’t really want to let go of the Aquanaut but resell is so strong I may need to sell to help fund. I love the calatrava but that 5146 just sings in my ear.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Mitch

The 5146 is a nice piece and I am certainly not trying to discourage you but all ACs are soft at the current moment so I would not do that trade unless you absolutely love the piece. Preowned Versions as some owners have said are going for low to mid 20's. Best of luck with your decision

Go for it man. If it sings to you then there's no need to second guess it. Beautiful watch.

Which Calatrava do you have, and did I understand correctly that you would you be trading both toward the 5146??

Edit: NM, I just saw the answer in your signature line. Would you be keeping the 5296?

I wouldn't but if the 5146 really sings to you then do it. Good luck and post us some pics.

I'd keep saving so you don't have to sell the Aqua.

Hard not to get a model that really sings to you, but I like the 2 you have more than the 1 you'd get. Just me, go with your gut.

Not, not personally. I'd much rather have a Calatrava and 5167.

I'd consider moving the Calatrava for a Lange 1 tho.

Thanks guys,

Great advice as always. So the consensus seems to not swap the two I have for the 5146. Thank you for putting into perspective.

I agree saving longer so I keep the aquanaut I think is the play here. I know I’d regret selling the aquanaut and likely have to go buy it again down the line....oh what a disease!

My concern isn't with the aquanaut so much, as it is with your 6 month old calatrava. The fact that you'd consider trading such a recent acquisition for a new AC makes me wonder how long it will be before the PC bug bites?

As goog53 mentioned above, you can also look at getting a pre-owned 5146G. Like the 5296G, the 5146G has been around for a while and there are many available for sale on the pre-owned market.

Another option is to trade in the 5296G for a 5396G. As the reference numbers suggests, they share some similarities in case design and dial layout. But then, you may be tempted to upgrade once more to the 5496 PC.

5146G I sold for about $24000 and it was 2 years old....however saying that the aquanaut and calatrava really does nothing for me and certainly didn't make 2 years like the 5146G...I would swap

I have the 5146g and absolutely love it. I consider it a staple in the collection and won't be selling it so am less concerned about it being soft in the current market. I would sell the Calatrava and buy a pre-owned 5146g so that you can keep the Aquanaut. That would give you a great 3-piece collection.

I would not, for some reason the AC Pateks are very soft. If you must, shop around for a great deal.

And the Aquanaut is getting harder and harder to find.

I love the 5146...ultimately if you feel you would love it more than the aquanaut, I say go for it.

When you have the 5146 it will get the most wrist time then Calatrava and the Aquanaut.... Trust me.....

Perhaps I shouldn't chime in, as I'm pretty new to the Patek Philippe world. My own preference is for simpler models, rather than complications. However, I must admit the Annual Calendar is stunning. And I love the 39mm case size.

However, looking at both the models you have, especially the Aquanaut is high on my list and the Calatrava model you have is a favourite, too. Although I can see the combined value - new - is around the same as the Annual Calendar, but the loss you take in selling the two might come back to haunt you if you want to replace either or both of them at some point. They are both great models.

I have done such things in the past, flipping two watches for one. But the watches were not on the same level as the Patek Philippe watches, so I had no regrets. At such a high end level as Patek Philippe, I would think long and hard about selling. And having a watch with such complications, perhaps you would miss the simplicity of the other two having just time/date and also the casualness of the Aquanaut.

BTW, where are you located in Canada? I just paid a visit to Brinkhaus Jewellers here in Vancouver. The gentleman who I dealt with there is on a training course with Patek Philippe in Switzerland and will be back in a week or so. They told me that they are planning an expansion and will have a Boutique in the new location, which I find quite exciting.

I also find the resale market here in Canada to be pretty limited for most watches, just due to our relatively small population/market. I will be interested to see how you make out with your decision.

Cheers,
Carl

Taking that into account, I would not do this trade. You have a great pair, while the 5146G is a lot less versatile. I would keep the 5167, save up and trade in the 5396 when the time comes for a 5146G.

Patek has always been known for their complicated watches, going back to their PCs, chronos and PCCs. For a long time, there was a gap between the complicated watches and the simpler 2-hand or 3-hand watches with or without a date.

Patek filled this gap when they introduced the AC and patented the complication some 20 years ago. The 5146 is definitely a step up from an Aquanaut or a Calatrava, horologically speaking. I have the Aquanaut, Calatrava and the 5146G (and others). But wearing the 5146 feels quite different compared to wearing the Aquanaut or the Calatrava.

Best of luck in your decision!

Yes, that makes the most sense. The aquanaut will be near impossible to replace and who knows at what price point.

The 5396 actually I do find versatile for a dressier watch because of the date. And put a more simple strap on it can be dressed down. I find if works fine as is in a suit or with a solid button down shirt and dark jeans with a sport jacket.

I’ll let you guys know what plays out soon. Thanks for all the great feedback.

That 5146 is just more special and that matters. But again I don’t know I’d part with the aquanaut.
