Precious metal/complication dilemma

So… Here is a first world problem. I’ve been wearing a Rolex platinum day date 40 for about 1 1/2 years. Prior to this I wore an AP perpetual calendar Royal Oak in stainless.

I have enjoyed wearing my Rolex for several reasons. It’s pretty straightforward, very tough and of course it’s platinum. There is something special about a precious metal.

However my regular guy has the new version AP Royal Oak perpetual calendar in stainless steel with the white face, which I prefer, which is calling my name.

So the question becomes, which? No I don’t want both.

Would you rather have one of the holy Trinity with a high complication in stainless steel or would you rather have one of the ultimate Rolexes and a precious metal? I am not looking for a what would you do and you are you like answer but rather what you think specifically.

I Love Love the Platinum DD!

If you got the cash to go back and forth, meaning sale the DD buy the AP, and if you don't like it and want to go back, then Re-Buy the P DD...

At least with the above scenario you would never have to wonder.

By the way, I would not do it, but I like wondering even less...

I like AP. The heritage of the company, the finishing on the watches. But damn! That day date is a better looking watch. Rolex rocks the crown for a reason. Their watches are a thing of beauty. I would keep both.

I would definitely keep the DD. A classic look and feel, and that AP has an awfully busy dial, IMO.

I’m not a Chrono fan, so it’s easy for me.

The other thing you may need to consider is the “feeling” you get from wearing either ... that’s a very personal user experience, but I’m sure one must evoke more of that than the other.

I’m having a similar dilemma with my 5712 vs Pt DD40.

I like the DD. It’s incredible. It’s the type of watch you never have to take off the wrist for any reason. I don’t know much about the AP (aside from that it’s a beautiful and I’m sure expensive). But it doesn’t look like the type of watch you want to keep on the wrist for everything you could imagine under the sun.

⬆️⬆️⬆️ Agree....I recently contemplated trading a PM Rolex for a SS Patek. I just couldn’t do it...like Brian said, it’s a feeling evoked. I really like PM, and prefer the feeling it gives me personally.
I like the AP, but wouldn’t make that trade ever...my .02

Both... yet IF one or the other, DD40 is sooo classic.

AP, but I’ve never been a big fan of the glacier dials, but that’s just me...I got a white dialed DJ recently....I thought I was going to get the blue until I went to the AD and tried on both; there is something special about a white dial.

I’m gonna go with the Rolex PM. Although there is a lot to admire with the engineering of the AP, the dd40 is going to be more reliable. That is hugely important to me.

Also there is the simple beauty of the platinum. It’s a natural material. I liken it to looking at a Van Gogh vs looking at some digital artwork on a 4K display.

I had the same issue when I got my pm Rolex- I thought about getting a jlc perpetual calendar. No regrets since then. The beauty of the metal is timeless.

Tough one. An AP PC is incredible. I would try it.

I'd actually stick with the DD. AP PC is a little busy for my liking and not an ideal dial set up either.

Another vote for DD, but if you are thinking about it then it means you want the AP. Is there a possibility to buy the AP yet keep the DD, try out both and then sell whichever one you like less?

Keep the Rolex- it's all in house, will work reliably and will last a lifetime.

The AP will be problematic, require frequent servicing and not all of it is in house.

That DD is memorizing. Too beautiful to trade away.

Sorry the AP just doesn’t do it for me.

I love the Platinum DD. I could live with that as my one watch after I retire. So I would do the flip

Never heard this before

Can you elaborate for this newbie?

Is it because it is a more complicated watch?

For the record, I’d keep the DD as well

I'd stick with the "Ultimate Precious Metal"
It's too beautiful to let go.
