The platinum DD is a lovely piece. However, despite its potential fragility, that AP perpetual calendar is just so beautiful, and personally, I would vote complication over metal. Even more so, if you liked wearing the AP before I wouldn't hesitate to go back to it. Just my .02

You said: "It’s pretty straightforward, very tough..."

Love AP in general but it'd be DD for me, and that is why. I also find that AP not as attractive as many of their others

If it were any other Rolex model, I would go with the AP.
But that DD is the ultimate Rolex. Keep it!

The complications of this watch movement means achieving reliability, thinness and longevity are an immense challenge. There are issues with other models in AP's catalogue too. Unfortunately AP QC is notorious for being poor, which results in owners becoming jaded and moving on from the brand.

AP outsource their cases (AP just finish them) and sometimes servicing, whereas Rolex are all in house. But I'd better stop with these comments or the AP fanboys will be after me with their pitchforks like before!

I do admire the brand even though they should change their name to The Octagon Watch Company and have personally owned a couple in the past. I was extremely privileged to be connected to some incredibly knowledgable owners and heard some horror stories about their watches which they flipped but stay loyal to the brand. At the end of the day, it's how a watch makes you feel. If you love it, you'll tolerate the unreliablity but if you don't...

If that AP is the blue dial then id say thats a better watch. But in this case the Day-Date 40 wins it. Thats platinum is just so yummy and the iceblue stick marker dial is just money.

I would keep the DD. I would not even consider that AP over the DD.

IMO, that is probably the prettiest DD out there. I am not such a fan of the AP RO look, and that dial is especially busy. So for me it would be an easy choice to keep the DD.

It sounds like you are a one watch person (I am too, pretty much). If that is the case, a DD would be a great choice. You can dress it up or down, it is rock solid and can easily withstand daily wear, and will require maintenance perhaps once a decade. I have never owned an AP, but other than the dressing up or down quality, I have seldom read on here that APs are particularly well suited for everyday wear, nor do they go long periods between maintenance. Also, the time it takes to get your AP serviced is supposed to be long as well, I believe.

I would keep the Rolex. For me the AP does look a bit busy.

Not extremely well-versed on the AP, but it looks like the three complications you would be gaining are month, perpetual calendar, and moon phase. While the craftsmanship of making this happen in a watch are phenomenal, are those three functions that you will ever need? The perpetual calendar might be nice.

The other thing that turns me away from AP is the case design. But since I do not own one, I do not know how they actually wear. Parts of it remind me of the oysterquartz. I have had 2 oysterquartz and sold them both. The reason was the sharp corners. I was always afraid if I were to Nick one of those, I could not get the original line back. I have seen many oysterquartz that have been polished to make the edges round.

I wear all my watches, and it sounds like you do too. Not sure when they refinish a Royal Oak if they can restore the edges. If they can, that would be great.

Just my thoughts.

That’s interesting.

Thanks for sharing!

I do realize that this is a Rolex forum. I wonder what members would comment if the OP posted this thread in an AP forum??

Thanks!

There is one AP model which never goes wrong and rarely needs servicing- the Full Date also known as the Triple Date. It's a 39mm Offshore which is bloody gorgeous and the right size but the movement isn't by AP. Because of it's size it unfairly gets labelled as a "womans watch". However, apply that argument to a Daytona and internet sparks fly!

My apologies to the OP because I've slightly derailed the poor guys thread. I'll leave it to go back on track now.

It is the Royal Oak perpetual calendar with moon phase. It gives you the day, date, month and year in perpetuity or at least until the year 2100 when there is an extra day on the calendar. I don’t think this would concern me much of my age. The 52 week chapter ring is an additional complication.

For me , I’d stick with the Rolex , actually I’d sell it and buy it in a smaller size ( but that’s a different story)
I don’t know enough about AP to have bought into their importance or heritage and to my novice ignorant eye it’s not a visually attractive watch.

i am new to Rolex ownership, and your dilemma is financially out of reach by decades; and admittedly a PM DD is my holiest of holiest grail watches. I am biased and would keep the DD.

its in house

If you are referring to the base movement that they also use in the 15202, they own it and make it in their manufacture. Rolex buys up their suppliers too to vertically integrate and they didn't develop everything themselves either. Now that they own the company, its made by "Rolex" regardless who developed it.

JLC developed it and AP use to own like 60% of of JLC. They own the movement now in any case, not the same thing as a modified ETA movement or something they get delivered and tweak.

I have heard "this" 100 times before, and im not a newbie. Don't buy an AP unless you have enough money not to care about x thousands of $ spend on service.

The week number complication would be very useful for day to day.

If it comes down to horology first then a QP from the holy trinity will always win out.

Yeah, I personally would stick with the Plat DD. The AP, while a grail for sure, is too complicated. The face is too busy (for me).

That DD rocks hard. If I bought another Rolex, this would be it.
