I Bought an AP Royal Oak and it did nothing for me personally. I did not get the chrono however. I have a DD RG and love the watch. Just my opinion.

This is so tough. But I am a fan of durability. Ultimately no way the ap is as durable.

To me, the AP looks cartoonish.

The AP dial is for too busy and cheapens the look, but one should wear what “speaks” to them.

I think this is a great question.
Thinking about what attracts me to mechanical watches in the first place, is the fact that it's all gears and springs that can keep amazingly accurate time. A high complication, like a perpetual calendar, takes that notion to the extreme, which is even more amazing.

I guess one way to view the question is, which do you appreciate more in a watch, the art and beauty vs. engineering and science.
I'm torn, thinking about my own list of watches I'd like to have, I would still want one of each.

Another question that comes to mind is, as more brands look towards more modular movements that allows them to add/ subtract complications to meet lower price points and costs, does the allure of a high complication watch lose it's appeal?

Not a fan of precious metal watches in general even less a fan of the RO range yes good movements but not a fan of the style.

aesthetically, DD40 without question...I could care less about the complications on the AP - nothing about it attracts me (and it's not a brand thing, as I like the 15202 and 15400)

Easy choice for me. I prefer PM over SS, and Rolex over AP. AP's have never called to me though, just not my style. When deciding between two it always comes down to:

Which do I want to wear right now?
Which would I put on tomorrow morning?
Which would I use the most?

I would Keep the DD - more beautiful and versatile watch at the same time - I am not a huge fan of AP though.
I would not think of the comparison as a "complication vs PM" because the DD has many great features by itself beyond the precious metal that I value higher vs the AP (the prestige due to its history, the movement/caliber , the bracelet, etc).

Exactly my sentiment, regarding RO, that is. I’d wear the hell out of the right PM watch though.

AP all day every day! The Plat DD is baller, distinctive and cool, but the AP has it CRUSHED on every level!
You can always get a vintage, head only, YG DD in the future for a song if you need that Rolex DD in your life.

In this case I would actually keep the DD. Nothing like PM and the weight of the platinum is addicting.

So since it's been a few months; what did you end up doing?!

It always goes back to this. Take that AP in the ocean, and your servicing that watch. I’m blessed enough to almost buy any brand but I continue to buy Rolex for its robust movements and impenetrable cases.
