In this case you will probably lose even more on this SS piece than if you had bought a PM piece from the gray dealers.

I did some more research I'm not a Daytona guy but I think you would be lucky to get $15-$16k as a trade value for the SS Daytona. If you bought that around $19k your down $4k.

I see brand new RG pieces BNIB for around $28k and second hand prices around $26k. Your losing less on the PM piece.
Buy 18k or 19 new, trading at 15k? that's 3 or 4k loss....buying PM BNIB at 28k pre-owned at 26k, then trading at 23 or 24 - same loss.

Good luck on your decision, OP.

You're getting a much better deal if you do the trade plus cash... Your SS will only go down in value because of the premium you paid. Buy doing this you're getting most of your cash back on that stupid premium you paid. Do it now while you can!

The rg Daytona looks sweet and is a lot more legible than the DaytonaC. I can’t get over the fact that you can’t read the subdials. I’d do it if you can negotiate a better deal.

It's ironic but doing this trade is the only way to really recoup your premium price on the 500. But then you end up with a gold watch that will lose $6-8k once you get the first scratch.

The math in my head:
Premium 500 price ~$18-20k
$9k add on
Rose gold Daytona $27-29k (which is a pretty strong price but attainable for new)

Trade in on used rose gold Daytona is probably $22-23k or so.

If one gets the 500 for MSRP and it's not a grail, then it's a really easy trade to make bacause even if you trade in the rose gold Daytona later on, you break even or make a little bit of money.

You'll get more than that on the RG Daytona if you wanted to trade it. It will be close to $25k trade

I would do it if you prefer the PM. Once you buy grey you are effectively accepting a loss should you wish to move on. I’ve done it and as long as that is acceptable to you then no worries.

Just by considering the trade, and asking the question here, is an admission that the Daytona C is NOT your grail. If you want the PM, get it.

I recently had to decide between buying a SS or a PM Daytona. I think that a sports Rolex is at its best in SS. For me PM is best in the DD.

If you are considering then it means you want the RG one. Go for it. I like PM pieces. They feel good to worn.

Great point and my thoughts exactly - with Basel around the corner I’m expecting Ceramic dials on PM Daytona’s with bracelet

If I paid retail for the 116500, and I really wanted that RG for daily use I would absolutely do it.

If the watch would just sit in my drawer while I wore something different, I would say no go.

No. Pm is nice but the SS is the Daytona. I can’t stand the swirls on the non ceramic bezel. Maybe sit tight and see if they release gold with ceramic this year.

I did that with a 116520. Sold it for way more than I paid for it and bought a 116508. All deprnds on what you want to wear more. I love my gold Daytona and wear it way more often than I did the stainless version.

I actually considered this exact trade very recently. I've been lusting after the everose daytona with black dial for several years. Unfortunately, I seemed to have missed the boat on being able to acquire one here from a trusted seller in mint condition for ~23/24k.

I spoke to a grey dealer after Christmas about trading in my new black dial Daytona-C for the rose gold. I was offered 18,500 for my watch, and was quoted the same amount in cash to upgrade to a mint rose gold piece.

My Daytona C was a gift from my spouse, so that weighed on my decision, and ultimately I decided not to do it. But I have to admit, while I love my black dial Daytona, the rose gold is the watch that really gets me excited. I've always wanted a PM piece, and I love this particular model (which has recently been discontinued, I might add).

The PM Daytona prices have definitely firmed up, and while I don't think the prices will hold as well as the SS, I think I would make the trade if 9k wasn't a huge hit financially. I'm just not comfortable with that extra investment - yet.

I'm curious is anyone here has any thoughts on how long the ceramic Daytona prices will stay elevated? Will they drop after the watch has been in production for a few more years or are we in a new reality where these SS pieces continue to command significant premiums?

I voted yes on the proviso that it is what you want, life is short and Gold trumps steel (yes I know many will disagree when it comes to Rolex!).

+1.
I also own both PM & SS Daytonas (both pre ceramic). PM Daytona always gives me special feeling everytime I put it on the wrist.

Keeping steel may be better 'investment' in the future (or may not). But not everyone collects watches for capital gain. I would do it if you really love the PM Daytona.

Think the last year of production was 2018. Have had two AD’s tell me it’s no longer in their 2019 catalogue.

Depending on how much of a premium you paid on your 500C, I would do it. I own a 116520 and 116505 and absolutely love the look and feel of PM on bracelet
