I have an Aquanaut (5066) and I love it. As must as I like them I wouldn’t buy a 5167 or 5168 as I wouldn’t want two of the same series, and they look huge on my wrist in a way the thinner Nautilii (5711/2) don’t. Something about the lugs.

this certainly won't be a popular opinion based on what I've seen but I think this is a much better watch than a nautilus.

only thing better about a nautilus in my view is the value retention (more tenuous if u buy at 2-3x MSRP) and the brand recognition.

I would have thought since ALS has a value-retention problem with most (all?) of their line that they would have priced this more entry-level, kept volume low for a while, and created an "over MSRP aftermarket" buzz.

28800 seriously? AP & VC below 20k - only Patek can demand such a price point and it's for their flagship, iconic and most wanted sports watch ref.

ALS missed their opportunity in the 70s' and it's maybe too late for them to ride the sports steel watches train?

Didn't the current company form in the early 90's? The older company collapsed during WWII or earlier.

Even Patek has an Aquanaut with bracelet at $22k and with rubber at $20k! I think you've been hanging around the RM boutique too long and are losing touch!

Y'all better reserve your places in line now, when the rubber strap comes out flippers will bid it up to $50k at grays :-). That opening $30k may soon look like chump change, hurry!

I do like the rubber strap option. However I think I will wait for a non-blue dial :)

Och Bob, he was having a nice wee rant there… until you interjected with that factually important morsel.

24th October 1994, with some assistance from JLC and IWC on the movement front to launch with 4 models.

Agree with you, and kidding aside, I don't see this one burning up the marketplace. But would be hilarious if it did and we saw Nauti's pile up at grays in exchange for Ody's, the irony would be exquisite.

Thanks! I was wondering what the plural of Nautilus was.

The production facilities had been largely destroyed in a Soviet air raid in May 1945 but the company only seized to exist when the Soviets dispossessed the Lange family in 1948.

With all due respect, I totally disagree.

I love my Glashutte Senator Chrono..........the finishing on the case, movement, attention to detail is phenomenal.
And ALS as a brand is on par with PP in the dress watch category.

You can say they goofed by making this watch at a price point that was too high and I agree totally with others who like the dial and movement, but not much else. But to say the Germans can't make a good watch is just not true.

After seeing this side by side pic, NO WAY.

I would take the 5711 all day/every day and twice on Sunday.

The polished bezel and bracelet just look.........off.
It just looks as though the watch has an identity crisis

Odysseus vs. Nautilus?

Jesus, that’s even worse. In my humble opinion the strap should attach to the case like this. The other way just looks hacked up. Plus it works with the springbars already in the bracelet.

As an additional sidenote, the adjustable bracelet with the push buttons is not new either, IWC has been doing it for years. Had it on my Fleiger over 10 years ago.

I feel the opposite, beside the 5711, the overall watch actually looks better than when by itself. Still I think the bracelet needs to go and a rubber strap put on there. I think I may try my aquanaut strap on it as I believe the width is the same!

Sounds like one needs to keep a 5711 close by in order to make that Lange look a little better...

I am joking...

Relax Jace… those are just mock-ups by Russell, using his imagination (and a bit of assistance from Photoshop).
