1675 Recommendations

Hi All,
I am relatively new to the world of Rolex. Some time back my father gave me his old 1675 which I have been wearing quite a bit. Unfortunately, yesterday while wearing it I hit it in a hard surface and cracked the crystal. Now I obviously need a new crystal, but should I consider addional work while it is in for this service. A little info about the watch, it is a 1.8 million serial number which I think puts it about 1967. It is well used watch, not abused, with a Mark 1 dial that has been relumened (rather poorly) at some time. It keeps excellent time. I think I would like the dial brought back to a more original appearance if possible, and I think that it has been about 9 years since its last service so it is due for that as well. I live about 70 miles from the San Francisco Service Center and have heard good things about them, should I bring it there for this work, can they or will they work on the dial or will they just replace it? I have heard good things about Dalton Toledo at ABC Watchwerks, should I send it to him. What would be my best course of action, considering I do not ever plan on selling this watch, and it is far from pristine from years of good service. Any help or suggestion are appreciated.
Thank You.

Welcome to TRF...the 1675 is a great vintage Rolex. I'm not sure if SF Rolex will service the watch due to the age, someone will chime in with more info on that....I've heard great things about Dalton as well as Bob Ridley. They seem to be the two talked about the most on the forum.

My advice would be to contact Dalton & Bob, maybe send them pics via email to get a better idea of what work could be done on the dial.

I'm not a vintage expert...just my two cents.

Do you have any pics that you can share with us?

Jim

RE: 1675 Recommendations

The Rolex Service Center in SF is fantastic. Giovanni is great and is very straightforward and helpful. Right now he is servicing my 1981 GMT Master 16750 and will next service my 1970 5513. So, yes they will service your '67 GMT.

I had contacted Bob Ridley and he was great to talk to and also very helpful. He may be a bit less expensive, but I just didn't want to deal with mailing, insuring and worrying whether the watch will make it there and back through the mail or delivery service. Since I live in the Bay Area, the SF RSC was and is the way to go.

Give Giovanni a call and talk to him about your watch and I am sure you will feel good about taking it there.

Good Luck!

Is that all red 24 hr hand correct for that watch? I am a GMT neophyte but have never seen one like that before.

Yes it is the real "red" hand. Steve checked that out first and gave it the thumbs up. I didn't get my hopes up, but When he told me the good news I was floored. Several other people shared pics of the rare hand, and I had a gut feeling. I was right. That one hand sets this out from most.

Thanks for all of the replies. Here are a couple of pictures to give people an idea of what we are talking about. I apologize for the poor quality of pictures as I obviously lack the camera skills of many forum members. Any comments regarding condition or originality are welcome.

Thanks Again
Paul

Excellent 1675!

As many mentioned, there are many options for servicing your vintage Rolex. I suggest calling/contacting a few and go with who you feel most comfortable with.

Good luck!
