Technically there is nothing "higher" than a Master Mason (the first 3 Degrees). The following 29 Degrees in Scottish Rite is just part of an appendant body. The 33rd Degree is an honorary Degree which one is elected to receive after many years of hard work. York Rite is another branch from the first three Degrees and consists of Chapter, Council, and Commandery. You need to be in good standing in your Blue Lodge to join Scottish and York Rite.

No I meant be a mason and a knight. Wasn't he referring to Knights of Columbus.?

I suppose that is a good question, although for some, the two groups are mutually exclusive, even though times have changed. Is it plausible you could be excommunicated from the Catholic Chuch for being a Mason? Yes, it's plausible, but highly unlikely.

Usually when one talks a out Masonry and Knights, it is usually in reference to The York or Scottish Rite. However we can't rule out the Knights of Columbus in this case until Lee responds.

This is true as I have been "knighted" via my journey to the 32nd degree, I assumed that was the path we were talking about ... But possibly not,,,

We cops, and Past Masters are easily confused!!! I was actually knighted with President McKinley's sword in Commandery. As for the Knights of Columbus, I know they have four Degrees and you MUST me a Catholic to be a Knight of Columbus. The Papal decree regarding Catholics and Masonry expired years ago. We have many Catholics in our Lodge.

True, we once had candidates black balled because some of the older members felt that by virtue of their religion they (Catholics) were unable to become initiated into the lodge. The lodge members had to have this explained (by the District Deputy no less) that it was okay for a Catholic man to become a Mason. Old thoughts die hard,,,

Two of my Masonic coins, the smaller one was given to me by the state Grand Master when I served as Worshipful Master of our lodge. The second large one (it weighs a ton!) was in items belonging to my great grandfather that were passed to me long after his death. I have his solid gold 33rd degree jewel, his 33 rd degree patent as well as some other items. He received his 33rd degree and died the same year.

Masons

Figured we could use some good news for our resident Police officers. I thought about posting a new thread, but decided just to add to this one.

Our Lodge is the enviable position relative to others in our district that we are able to make a civic donation regularly. We’ve done lots of varied things in the past, but for a number of different reasons we have not made a significant donation in a couple years. We still though have run a food drive and donated bikes to local schools as awards for their reading programs.

When I went into the east last October I knew I wanted to get us back to doing something bigger for the community. One of the parents in my oldest sons Boy Scout Troop is a city Police officer. Going into the year my thought was to make a donation to our cities K9 program. The officers response was “that dog gets so much damn money”. I asked what they really needed and he said a motorcycle. Our city is short of funds like most in this country and they need to buy a new car, so the motorcycle budgeting was going nowhere. A new motorcycle is in the 35 -40 thousand dollar range. But. Our police department had been offered first choice of a motorcycle that is the same make of the current one we have, from a nearby city that is surplussing some. It was offered to Poulsbo for $7,000. Plus they would need to add about $1,500 in radios and stickers.

I went to the next officers meeting with the idea of donating a portion of the funds needed. As soon as I presented the idea our secretary said lets buy them the whole thing. We took it to the members at the next stated meeting and it passed unanimously when we voted. So $8,500 for a motorcycle and radios.

It’s actually a much longer story, but we donated a motorcycle to our local police department. As far as I’m concerned it’s the highlight of my year.

And now you know what I look like, I'm wearing the hat.

Jason, I don't know much about Freemasonry, but I sure like this. Kudos to you and your brothers.

This is AWESOME!! Congrats on being able to do it! My lodge does all we can and neglect our building to do it but still couldn't pull that off in a year and still help any others financially.

Excellent job brother, your time in the east has been fantastic, that Past Masters jewel is going to feel great hanging from your chest! From a Past Master/Past Treasurer and a retired police officer, thank you.

I did my own study a few years back. Bit deep for me. You chaps get some bad press, especially online but the Masons I know (some in my family) and most I've met are really good guys, and that's good enough for me. Also I never ever mention anything about it to them and they seem to appreciate that.

I was a bit dubious before I joined but having been in for 18 months, I wish I'd started my journey a lot earlier. To date it's been enlightening and a lot of fun. There has been no evidence of the negative press. Sky TV have done a series on being a Mason as part of the 300 years celebrations. Hopefully it will be a good watch.

Maybe when the antics of my 20s are further behind me I might stand more of a chance and take up the interest again.
