Pushing a guy into buying a piece today —by accident
I was at a dealer today and I asked to look at a pilot watch.. Patek. A guy was viewing it.. they showed it to me but I did not care for it...nor can I afford ..
the guy then declares “I’ll take it”... the sales guy (not my guy but his) shook my hand as we left , privately, and said, “ You were the tipping point. Thank you.“ I ended up buying nothing and that Patek is above my price range. I’m unsure if the model but it’s nice. It looks like a zenith to me .. but better craftsmanship..so I helped sell a Patek today and got no commission . In Manhattan. If the guy is reading this, it’s a great watch and congratulations. Update. I think it was this model: PATEK PHILIPPE COMPLICATIONS CALATRAVA PILOT TRAVEL TIME 5524R-001 |

Haha! Good story! All it takes is that perception of scarcity, and that feeling that it’s in someone else’s hands and they might buy the last one. You’re correct about the same font style of Arabic numbers on the Zenith. I’ve also seen the same font style on an early VC Overseas. I suppose certain font styles are ubiquitous like Breguet style numbers.

It’s a nice watch but I wasn’t interested.. I’m now wondering if we both weren’t played. I didn’t ask to see it. It was offered after i asked to see Patek pieces

Haha, good story. Sounds like you both may have been played by a super slick salesperson!
Having said that, I quite like the 5524r myself and have it on my radar for purchase at some point. But like the person who bought it in your situation, I too will need a little nudge to close the deal! Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk |

I wish they would make a generally available watch like the 5522 but in Rose Gold. I keep looking at the 5524 but those knobs bug me.
Wishful thinking! |

I owned a zenith pilot and tried on the 5524R. before I tried the Patek pilot, I had the same feeling that it looked awfully like my zenith pilot. However, after i strapped it on, it felt completely different and the craftsmanship from patek is so much better.

The craftsmanship is top notch on the Patek. It’s Avery understated piece . To clarify, though.. my sales guy was different than the Patek buyers sales guy . He approached as we left thanking me quickly . I hadn’t bought anything .. I think that pilot piece is likely a stunner long term. Watches have a way of doing that for me. After a year I start to notice subtle details etc ..

Nothing more than quality salesmanship. I’m sure the guy wanted the watch. Sometimes a little nudge is all it takes on these sorts of purchases.
It’s such a nice piece I certainly don’t feel bad for him!

Perfect lead way for the Patek rep to put you on the 5711 waitlist.

The 5524R is beautiful, certainly a dream timepiece. Alas, too big for my wrist, and much bigger than budget. Congrats to that buyer, though. Well played by the salesman.
