John Prine Passed

The Covid-19 got him. We saw him open for Bonnie Raitt about 20 years ago. They played “Angel From Montgomery” together. (She has the most famous version, but he didn’t write it for her. He said he was just too stupid to realize that men weren’t supposed to write songs about women in the first person).

Notoriously gravel-mouthed, especially after his throat cancer (his surgeon, noting he was a musician, offered to be careful around his vocal chords. Prine told him, “Doc, have you ever heard me sing? Don’t worry about the voice. Get the cancer!”). I am partial to his performance of a cover, “Killing the Blues”. I like it better than the version Robert Plant and Allison Krauss did recently.

He was a great lyricist. I recommend asking your Alexa or Spotify to play “Unwed Fathers”, his duet with Emmylou Harris. It pierces your heart to hear her sing,

Your daddy never
meant to hurt you ever.
He just don’t live here.
But you’ve got his eyes.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Prine.

I am so sad to hear this, was a wise and gentle human. A true artist and old soul.

RIP, John Prine. You left a great legacy.

Listen to Susan Tedeschi perform Angel from Montgomery on You Tube. Worthwhile.

John Prine

This one hurt. A lot.

It’s time to open up the George T Stagg I’ve been saving for a “special occasion” and pour one out for one of the greats.

RIP John. I’ll be listening to your albums all night.

I have a live recording of Angel From Montgomery with Bonnie ... beautiful, soulfulness.

May he rest easy.

John Prine Dead at 73

John Prine, One of America’s Greatest Songwriters, Dead at 73
John Prine, who for five decades wrote rich, plain-spoken songs that chronicled the struggles and stories of everyday working people and changed the face of modern American roots music, died Tuesday at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was 73. The cause was complications related to COVID-19, his family confirmed to Rolling Stone.

Prine, who left behind an extraordinary body of folk-country classics, was hospitalized last month after the sudden onset of COVID-19 symptoms, and was placed in intensive care for 13 days. Prine’s wife and manager, Fiona, announced on March 17th that she had tested positive for the virus after they had returned from a European tour.

As a songwriter, Prine was admired by Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, and others, known for his ability to mine seemingly ordinary experiences — he wrote many of his classics as a mailman in Maywood, Illinois — for revelatory songs that covered the full spectrum of the human experience. There’s “Hello in There,” about the devastating loneliness of an elderly couple; “Sam Stone,” a portrait of a drug-addicted Vietnam soldier suffering from PTSD; and “Paradise,” an ode to his parents’ strip-mined hometown of Paradise, Kentucky, which became an environmental anthem. Prine tackled these subjects with empathy and humor, with an eye for “the in-between spaces,” the moments people don’t talk about, he told Rolling Stone in 2017. “Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism,” Dylan said in 2009. “Midwestern mind-trips to the nth degree.”

Just awful news. Like you Brew, I’ve been dreading this since his wife first let the public know, last week. A hero gone. RIP Mr Prine.

Oh no... I watched him live several years ago. Me and my ex went to go see Conner Oberst who opened the show for John. He put on a great show and his music was essentially a life story. He had been battling throat cancer for years but was still quite the troubadour. The lyrics are very meaningful invoking humor, sadness, happiness and regret. I wish I could have seen another of his shows before he passed but am glad that I got to see him live.

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go

God Speed John.

A great artist, writer and human being. Maybe now he can reunite with Steve Goodman and sing a round of "you never even called me by my name".

So very sad. I first saw him on a double-bill with the Cowboy Junkies in the early '90s. I saw him last in April of 2019 at Atlanta Symphony Hall. Fantastic songwriter. The world has lost a true artist. I dug your music, John Prine. You will be missed.
