16570 service

Hi! I have a 1999 16570 swiss only Explorer 2 which even when fully wound doesn't run unless lightly tapped. I sent it to RSC for servicing and said they would need to overhaul the movement as well as replace the crown.

Should I refuse to have the crown changed and find an independent watch maker? Will replacing the crown affect the value of the watch?

Regards,
Neal

Service replacement crown is the least value-affecting component (along with crystal for this generation) and proper sealing is needed for waterproofing. I’d be ok with crown replacement for 16570 if I were you.

That's definitely an owner preference type of thing. If it's important for you to keep the original crown, I suspect that an independent could replace the seals. RSC just won't bother to do that.

Crown/tube/crystal are disposables for me.

If the crown isn't changed they won't guarantee the watch in some cases (look at the paperwork does it say required or recommend) if recommended you can refuse. If it's required you can still decline but they may say we won't guarantee the watch for any water proofing. I had the same issue on my watch but with a clasp, if I didn't get it done they wouldn't have guaranteed the bracelet only the watch head and for like £140 I thought might as well! They were ever so kind to return my other clasp back too.

Also, I don't believe it will have an impact on the value / originality of the watch.

The only way anyone would ever know that the crown had been replaced is from the paperwork
Visually it would be impossible like for like part

Thank you for the feedback everyone! Yes, crown replacement is required and is a stanard part of the service for full overhaul of the movement. The original crown will not be returned.

Will have RSC go on with the service.

the crown matters more for vintage pieces, albeit only marginally. I suspect someone would pay more for a 5513 with the original 700 crown vs. a later 703 service crown.

Matters less for the 16570

Thanks! This watch comes as a full set and is an unpolished example hence me being wary of having the crown replaced.

Will now have to wait 3 to 4 weeks to get it back from RSC.

They'll overhaul the movement and clean the watch. Specifically told them not to polish it.
