if it was still in production maybe. Im not into models i cant get new or at least BNIB. If i miss the boat on a watch due to a discontinuation, that ship has sailed never to return again. Thats one thing i cant come around on. 42mm is the sweet spot for me though.

Its the only reason I never added a Ce diver. It was discontinued before I was able to buy.

I will get the ALS Datograph though not the current version, but the previous version with the roman indices. I find that dial a lot more attactive and balance. But thats a subjective opinion though.

Out of curiosity, why are you thinking of getting rid of your RG44 citing "old age" as a reason? Are you already in your late 50s? If not, that's a long time off and if it's me, I will probably keep it and enjoy it.

i just meant its not timeless to me and that when im old it will feel too young of a watch. Im not old now relatively speaking, not quite 40. If im going to sell eventually then the price ill get for it isnt going up if i wait and its going to keep falling, which is what im saying. Plus, already thinking of an eventual exit plan isnt a good sign. None of my other watched fit into that line of thinking as they are great for now and great for the future. Plus the AP's were pushing up against my comfort zone size wise anyway and i found myself passing on wearing them more than i should.

I prefer the Pateks over a Dato but would have a really hard time saying no to a Zeitwerk.

I am quite sure Ken will probably disagree with you on "too young a watch" part as he happily rocks a 44mm offshore. As for future resale value, nobody knows for sure. But if you find yourselves wearing them less, then yes, perhaps time to move on.

Buying a used Patek presumably means that there’s no requirement for an additional jewellery purchase.

You have Patek well covered aside from more complicated stuff. I’d get the dato but admittedly like the 5170 more.

Given your starting point I think it must be the Dato.

I've owned the Up/Down for a few years and I agree with your assessment that the Dato is a casual watch. It is also, like the PPs too, pretty much under the radar and would not be picked out of a lineup by and non WIS! Also, given your appreciation of having a little heft on the wrist then I think the Dato does carry that. At 41mm and with the Platinum case it's a lot of watch on the wrist.

Finally, if it is to be you one ALS the I think a big date is a necessity. That rules out the beautiful, cheaper but a little more formal 1815 Chrono Black Dial.

I think ALS are beautiful watches. But they are thick! I have never tried one on, but have a friend with an L1. I imagine this goes without saying, but I would make sure to try on a Dato in platinum before buying it. That has to be one hefty watch! I do not know, but am not sure it would be comfortable to everyone due to its size.

The back of that sucker is gorgeous (as well as the front).

Admitidly, I would rather the 5170, but between your choices, I’d go with the ALS.

Since you have 3 great PPs already, I voted for the ALS. But I like the 5170P!

Break your rule and get a Double Split in platinum. The RG version is not as nice but it is at least still available new. If you can find the Sincere limited edition better still!

obviously im having trouble making up my mind as given the weekend to think about it and the most logical "replacement" for my offshores would be a 5990.
Its the big and sporty Patek and probably the offshore equivalent of the Nautilus line up, plus its a chrono (ok 60 minute counter ).

If i decided on that though I would pretty much end up with all the love it or hate it Pateks (5712,5524,5990, and 5164). And every travel time variation. I like that complication, but since its useful and you can hide the second time zone I don't think of that complication as redundant across multiple watches the same way as having 3 chronographs would be redundant. Plus maybe a 5990 and a 5712 is a better pair of Nautilus's vs a 5712 and 5726.

No decisions as of yet other than the offshores are going for sure. Going to take my time on this decision as im all over the place currently. The ALS is my grail for sure, but its not a sporty watch and maybe i should be looking for a larger sporty watch to replace the watches i am flipping and continue to save for the ALS to just add it down the road.

Tyler adding a 5990 and the Datograph later would leave you with an amazing watch collection.

You know my views on the 5990, it might be the only PP to pull me away from AP

Patek 5990 is a beast and I love it. I would add it now if you can. Seems like all Nautilus models are harder to get. I have the first generation Datograph and it is a great piece only thing is I’ve been thinking about selling it for the 5170p.
