Watch of the Month #6: Did I hear Paul Newman...

~Paul Newman Daytona Rare Gold 6241 w/ Pump Pushers ~

We feature a rare treat for this month, a one owner Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6241 in 14kt gold with exotic dial aka Paul Newman dial and pump pushers.

The owner was given the watch as a 21st birthday gift from his parents (substantiated by the engraving on the case back). It would not be overstating the fact to say that these proud parents gave their beloved son the gift of a lifetime.

Even though this is a beautiful and luxurious Rolex watch, neither the owner nor his parents could have guessed in their wildest dreams that this would become one of the most sought after Rolex watches in the world because of a pleasant turn of fate.

The dial on this watch can be referred to as an "Exotic Dial" variant due to the numeral Art Deco fonts in the sub dials and the markers in between those numerals being square. Exotic dial Daytona’s were sold in much lower numbers than the standard dial version. It is believed that the exotic version took much longer to sell than the standard version because buyer preference at the time favored the simpler standard dial. ,

Dial only.jpg

Legend has it that the exotic dial became known as the Paul Newman dial in the 1970's or 1980's. It is rumored that Paul Newman wore his personal Daytona (a gift from his wife, the actress Joanne Woodward in 1972) on the cover of a popular Italian magazine in the 1970's. Italian collectors took notice and began calling the watch the "Paul Newman" and started to seek them out.

The popularity of the Paul Newman Daytona rose quickly as did prices which have surpassed the six-figure mark and based on estimates for auctions in the near future may achieve over one million dollars. Hence, an inseparable association between the exotic dial Daytona and Paul Newman was created.

Amazing! Thanks for the history!

One question, should the caseback have a date stamp? Curious if some references didn't have the caseback stamp?
