chronograph questions

Hi,

which would you choose between 2 chronos?

the rolex daytona 6263 (not paul newman) or a datograph platinum yr 2000?

they are both hovering at $40k

Hi Benzng. I have a 6263, mk1 bezel, mk0 pushers and if not for sentimental reasons I'd flip it in a heartbeat for the Datograph. I love my 6263 for all the reasons many others do. It's a wonderful watch. I've handled the Datograph many times, too many times and every time I turn it over the architecture, fit and finishing of that movement, that miniature city, is absolutely mesmerizing. They are both outstanding watches but for me the ALS is leaps and bounds over the Rolex. Good luck, you can't go wrong with either.

I love the Daytona, but for all the reasons Ralph mentioned above I'd go for the Dato. I don't think there is a more beautiful machine than the Datograph.

If I was in a position to acquire a time piece at that price level the Rolex wouldn't be even in consideration it would definitely be the Datograph. I will never forget the first time I had the Datograph in my hand when I turn it over I was totally blown away. Never before or since then I have seen a more beautifully finished movement. I'm sorry and I know I'm in a Rolex forum but the Rolex is not even in the same league.

As others before me have said, there's no comparison - it's by far a better watch.

If you want to wear the Dato the wrong way around to look at that fabulous movement and possibly loose money go for that but if you want an awesome vintage Daytona 6263 that will hold and increase in value then get that... Ive gone for option B and cant wait to get my full set Panda BIGred :-))

As someone who has owned multiple Dato's and 6263's I would tell you 6263 in a heart beat! The Dato is an amazing watch but the 6263 is pure Rolex perfection both timeless and pure understated class. Of course they are quite different and most don't put them up against each other when looking to buy watch. So do you want vintage or modern?

There is no real comparison between theze 2 watches. the only common factor is that they are expensive watches
so how to derermine a choise... ?

Similar in function but such different pieces. Cliche as is sounds you really can't lose.

I would take a nice 6263 big red personally as I prefer the up/down for the dato.

buying the dato at 40k is a fair price for the watch and i would say, likely to hold there or even go up, you can wear it and enjoy it for what it is, one of the finest movements and one of the nicest watches in recent production among all brands imho

buying the daytona at 40k is a price where it may hold or appreciate however if you decide you want to wear it, then the onus is on you to find a trustworthy source to maintain, repair and source oem spare parts if available… if there is a hiccup in the process of repair and parts, you could lose a lot of value in this watch…

for me, the question then becomes is it a watch you want to wear or a watch you want to collect?

considering that you have presented an either/or scenario and are considering a preowned piece indicates to me that you enjoy the hobby but have a limit to the resources you choose to allocate toward it. ie 40k may not be an amount you want to just sit in a safe and occasionally enjoy when compared to something you could have as a daily wear… this is how i think of my daily wear a patek 5170.
