What is an appropriate discount?

Hello Everyone!

What would an appropriate discount be from an AD for purchasing a Rose Gold 116515 chocolate face with arabic numbers? I have been in love with this watch for a few years and I think I am ready to pull the trigger!

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't buy a PM model without at least a 15% discount.

The AD has a 38% margin from MSRP. Any discount would depend on AD policy and your form of payment and your ability to negotiate. Lots of valuable info here with the search function. I would personally not entertain a Rolex PM watch purchase without about 25% MSRP relief.--unless it was a high demand piece.

I always start with I am not ready to buy now. A good salesman will ask "what can I do to sell you one today." For that watch, based on internet prices, I would offer $20k out the door.

In my two purchases I got them both for less than retail and never paid sales tax. They have had to take the sales tax off the price of the watch.

Hope this helps. Please report back your experience.

Presumably you've done your homework and you know what they go for from a trusted seller here.

I'd take that information and bargain for the best price from your AD. Be prepared to pay a bit more from your AD. The rest is up to you.

Good luck

This.

I absolutely adore (and have bought a lot from) my AD watch manager, but, he and I have just had to agree that when I am ready for a WG Sub it will likely be from DavidSW. Looking at what PM watches (all brands) sell for second hand I can only imagine what a seller buys them for. And I don't want to be the poor sap taking that hit.

Now, if you are going to keep it forever (famous last words) and want the AD experience, then I would shoot for as close to 30% off as you can get. As stated about 38% is the mark up and the AD has bills to pay.

Where did that "38% margin" number come from? Last I heard it was 40% in the US until Rolex ADs got hit with a 3.5% increase (RRP stayed the same). By my math that would mean a 36.5% margin for ADs.

So even with a deep discount of 30%, they'd still make a little profit. Hardly enough to cover costs. But for a piece that's not moving... they might be willing to eat it.

25% or so, Alikara saved me a bundle on a rg DD40 with diamond dial. Great guy too!

I would work toward 25% off and no tax. Depending on the desirability of the watch this is a very workable number for the AD. Much has been said about the AD cost on the watch and the two AD's I work with have both told me in 2017 that the margin is 62%. The math is easy but the AD's position is not. They all have a contract with Rolex that states they will keep a certain amount of watches on hand and when they swipe the card to activate the warranty they also are sent a new watch to replace the one they sold. Most of the accounts are payable within 10-30 days of receipt of the new watch. Each contract is different but the basics are the same. The AD's also get concessions from Rolex on hard to move models and NOS. A deal is out there to be had. On most of my PM purchases or trades my AD's are not in the picture due to the fact that they are not set up similar to the Trusted Sellers. I always check with them but just as a "can you do this deal". If you can figure out the AD the playing field can be leveled.

When I bought my new Milgauss Z Blue a month ago, compared to buying used 2014, after paypal fees, a cleaning at the AD, there was only a $318 difference from buying new.

If I ever go after a PM model I cannot help but to think I cannot ever get an AD discount good enough to justify going that route vs a great pre-owned version of the same watch.

Kind of like buying a brand new car...it all boils down to how much one can justify losing to depreciation.

The black or chocolate/F.Rocher, I do love their eggs, dials are both stunning. I bought from an AD for a 15% discount in the notorious UK but I didn't want more of a discount as I owed them. In the US I would want 25% minimum. I would buy a PM Rolex new or unworn with stickers rather than pre-owned as it takes the shine off a high luxury piece I have found.

Newbie here, what is the difference between a PM model and a regular one? Why would it be worth less.

You'll get what you negotiate; whether appropriate, that's up to you to decide.

one is made of precious metal (gold, platinum etc), while the other is made of stainless steel.
