Patek First Timer

Question to those who eventually made their way to PP, I have been wanting to sell one of my Day Date for a 5205R-001; those who traded a watch for a Patek, did you find that it was worth it? I know Patek is the crown jewel of watches, but did you feel that taking a small hit on a trade plus spending extra $$$ was worth it?

No, I did not.
I am back to all Rolex (well nearly, I still own an AP ROO), six fabulous, reliable, go anywhere, super duarble Rolex. They may have a rather pedestrian movement to look at, though in truth I never spent much time looking at the movements, and unless you do with a loupe I much rathered looking at some of the great movement photographs on this site.
A big factor for me is that I like to wear my watches on a bracelet, the Rolex bracelet is my preferred design, your DD on the President bracelet (the majority of DDs are) is better than any bracelet that Patek offers IMO.
Try to achieve some wrist time first, many PPs will feel insubstantial following your DD.

Yes it's worth it, but you still need Rolex in your life. If getting your first Patek and you're in the US I'd get a 5522 while you still can.

Yes, worth it. The feel and look of a Patek on the wrist is amazing. That said, I still have other watches I love to wear including Seiko and Rolex.

If you call insubstantial the fact that you barely feel wearing a watch with PP while Rolex is like wearing a brick, then I agree. I needed a few days to adapt but once I did it was over..

I had 4 Rolex, 3 great Pams and a few other watches when Ibgot my first Patek, after that I couldn't stand wearing those bricks, now I wear 1 AP and 3 PP, did get a Daytona C but for the wife, one of the only more or less comfy Rolexes around

Patek make a high quality watch for sure so go for it by all means. As for the name thing, I thought buying a Patek would be a big deal but the cache/allure or whatever soon faded away, sadly as we move deeper into this or any hobby it is usually diminishing returns. It was far more impactful to me getting my first nice watch, a SS Rolex, as that was years ago.

Well I learned something interesting today, Patek will service anywatch no matter how old, unlike Rolex

It is really a personal choice. Many people love the DD and it is their grail watch. IMO a Patek AC is at a different level.

Financiallly speaking, if you are to buy and sell Rolex precious metal watches or a regular production Patek watch (other than a SS Nautilus), you are going to take a loss. However you have to consider that as the cost of ownership and personal enjoyment. With any hobby, there are expenses related to participating.
