VERY RARE Sinn 142 Titanium w/ Lemania 5100 Movement in SUPERB Condition

Up for sale is the incomparable Sinn 142 Ti Ar on matching and original titanium bracelet commemorating the flight in 1985 of German Spacelab Mission “D1” (Deutsche 1) (STS 61). This watch, an original German market edition that original owner brought to the U.S.

The Model 142 features the extremely rugged and accurate, but no longer produced, Lemania 5100 automatic chronograph movement. The Lemania 5100 was used primarily for military issue watches, especially for NATO air forces, and it shows in its durability and accuracy. The movement in the Model 142 was modified by Dubois-Depraz at Sinn’s direction to display a 24-hour indication at 12 o’clock. So far as I am aware, this is the only Lemania 5100 modified to have a 24-hour indication -- useful given its intended use in space. This watch is the rarest iteration of the Model 142: fabricated in titanium, filled with Argon gas to prevent moisture infiltration (and marked as such on the dial), and utilizing a replaceable capsule to visually confirm the presence of moisture. The watch also has an internal pilot’s elapsed time bezel, which is operated by a setting crown at 10 o’clock. In keeping with its character and features, the Model 142 is a large timepiece. The cushion-shaped case is approximately 43.5mm in diameter, excluding the crown, with a lug to lug length of approximately 44.5 mm; the thickness is 17 mm. All chronograph hands return to zero correctly and the watch is keeping excellent time. The back of the watch features a beautiful and large engraving of the Space Shuttle in honor of the D1 Mission featuring the legend “1st Automatic Chronograph In Space.”

For those new to collecting Sinn’s, it is important to note that this version represents what is widely considered to be the best iteration of the Model 142. Many other versions were stainless steel (which never made it to space), used a modified ETA movement after Sinn could no longer obtain Lemania 5100’s, displayed small and simplified back engravings, featured D1 logos on the dial in lieu of the correct seconds register, and the like. Sinn without question delivered an incredible watch with the Model 142, with a well-known and honorable provenance, but seemingly couldn’t resist the temptation to exploit it with oddball variations to the point that there is now a new “Model 142 II,” which is actually a totally different watch (and not nearly in the same league, IMHO).

Excellent condition with no dings, dents, or deep scratches. Few desk diving swirls can be seen on clasp.

All original with German dial and day window.

Comes with original Sinn box, original purchase receipt from Sinn, and instructions.
