When People React to Your Rolex

So, this happens to me with a few things... Im a humble guy who has had to work hard for the things I enjoy. Same with my wife...

Sometimes, I run across people who react to my home, my cars and now my Rolex like this.... "oh it must be nice to be rich"....

I am far from what one would call "rich"....comfortable, perhaps... but I know what a truly well off person is, as I know several and have a few in the family as well.

Has this happened to you and what is your response?

Has only happened a few times and each time I have responded by asking, what is your definition of rich?

I was just at my kids baseball game and my neighbor who’s kid is also on this small town team blurts out; in front of all the other parents, “Hey, when did you get a Rolex?”. I never felt so embarrassed. In 15 months of ownership, I’ve never had someone notice my watch, I was at a loss for words.

Say it was left to you by your deceased brother (true), that (should) shut them up pretty fast.

Many years ago I bought a Jaguar XJ-S. It was my dream car. People would say, "you have a Jaguar, you must be rich."

I replied, "now I have a Jaguar, I used to be rich."

Well... I thought it was funny at the time.

No one has ever said anything to me about the Rolexes except my father-in-law, who can't say anything nice about anyone.

It rarely comes up for me. When it does I always reply. It’s my bad habit. I assume then they think about what theirs is and that usually shuts them up.

The only people who notice are other enthusiasts / sophisticates / geeks. That’s always the start of a great conversation.

I never draw attention to what I’m wearing and most plate oblivious. A non watch guy never even says nice watch or what are you wearing.

Owning a Rolex means you must be rich?

Some folk are simpletons, they will never understand spending thousands on a watch.. if they had thousands to spare they would buy X and Y and this and that.. ask them what they would buy if they had all that already.. that's my answer.

I am not rich by any means. I may be rich compared to the poverty stricken in the country, or to folks in the third world, but I am certainly not rich in the grand scheme of things, in fact I have very little. I do have a nice watch though.

Was having a beer with my next door neighbor. I told him I bought a Rolex during a trip to Norway last year. The first thing he asked was if it was real. After that the subject changed.

A few months earlier I was talking to my sister-in-law about the same trip to Europe. She asked if I bought any souvenirs. I handed her my watch (216570) and she said boy, is that heavy.

I had a sales guy point out my rolex in a way that made me uncomfortable, essentially saying he wasn't getting paid enough, I told him that if he spent half of what he did on booze he would have 5 by now. He never mentioned it again.

I either don't get out enough, or when I do, I look like I don't want to talk about my watch.

Could be both.

Meh.. that's the usual story for wearers of fakes trying to pass them off as real (I inherited it from a grandfather, father, brother, gift from an uncle = fake watch being passed off as real).

Many commented "Nice Rolex..." when I was wearing my $300 Seiko turtle, it feels good that you don't have spend lots on a watch to feel rich

Thanks and walk away. Unsure why that is so complicated.

If it is from good friends, maybe get richer friends.

In two decades the most negative remark was a nurse that said my TT DJII is a "bit flashy"
Mostly nobody notices and if they do ,the comments are very positive

I usually look like a vagabond, sometimes buy second hand clothes, wear Sanuk slip-ons, and faded ball caps.

No one that didn't know me has ever made a comment about my watches. I'm sure they assume they are fake.

Recently I was at an outdoor cafe with a bunch of other guys. Everyone had a Rolex on except one of the guys that sports a gold A. Lange. It's a seaside town and the dress code is anything goes. I'd guess that most of the Rolex watches in attendance were over 20 yrs old.

When you could buy a GMT or SUB at the military Post Exchange (PX) for $250, Rolex was not a big deal.

my Buddies and some of my customers like to bust my chops.
My thought is better to be successful than not! I think people’s favorite thing to bust my butt is comments like. It’s been 3 months Danny should be getting a new car or watch now. Doesn’t bother me I just play along with it.

I usually tell them it's a cheap replica bought somewhere exotic... the problem is when the guy asking is wearing a fake replica too!

It’s an odd comment for someone to make. Just say thank you. I’m not sure why anyone would pretend that their watch is a fake or be embarrassed about it. It’s a watch, nobody really cares.
