Has anyone ever seen a sapphire caseback for an 18k gold Rolex?

I don't own a SS model, and I think the idea is interesting.

I'll have it pressure tested the next time I visit my watchmaker. The caseback is pretty robust so I am confident that it will rate at the advertised 10ATM.

i think it's only beneficial for the daytona to have the clear caseback

The caseback does not affect the watch's waterproofness :) It comes with a hitrel gasket. When installed properly, the watch retains the same water resistance as a brand new one.

I will send a video tomorrow that shows waterproof test using the sapphire caseback.

Here is the video I promised yesterday. A bit long but it shows the installation of our caseback using the plastic screw ball and a water resistance test to show the caseback does not affect water resistance.

especially on a Daytona.
I think the Daytona is the only Rolex that has the model printed in red on the winding rotor.

0.5 and 3 bars are industry standard tests :)
We could certainly push the test to 5 or 8 bars...

Ken,

I believe they both would. I know the Thomas Preik caseback would certainly, and the SWC one would as well. Fortunately, the threads and diameter are the same on the GMT and the GMT-C.

Sorry to say this.... but I don't think the Rolex movement is finished enough to warrant a display back...

I am so to say this... but I feel a Breitling movement (even though only 7750 basis) are nicely finished. The Rolex however was not made for display.

Patek on the other hand.... that is a movement to display!

Walmart has a observation back for your Rolex for $100.00 (Armitron).

It has a skeleton front so you can also watch the watch work while you wear the watch. That way, you can see what goes on in your watches without changing anything about your Rolex.

If you want to stay all Swiss, Invicta Pro Diver has a clear back for about two bills. Has the look and feel of a GMTII. Still less than changing your Rolex back.

Something to think about.

I think the Daytona has a movement that can be shown off. With all due respect...that is a very boring looking movement for a Patek to have a clear back.

The Daytona is much more interesting to look at IMHO.

Also, no other Rolex model seems to have an interesting looking movement to view from the back besides the Daytona. That's just my opinion.

Lastly, I would never do it to my watches...I prefer the depth rating to be right where it needs to be...12,800 feet!
