Excessive?

So let me begin by stating openly that I have self awareness of a) my propensity to collect, b) to collect things in series, and c) to not rest until I have completed a series, only to move onto the next series of things.

Having gotten that out of the way, I am a love of all things that tick. I have over two dozen in the stable from Seiko, Omega, Breitling, Panerai, Tag and of course, Rolex. Simply stated: I. Love. Watches.

In the Rolex section, I recently picked up a White Explorer II in 42mm and have fallen in love with the simplicity of design and almost unassuming appearance (to me) of its look. It has slowly crept up as one of my favorites to wear and although I certainly am lucky enough to have more "exotic" references, I find when I wear this one that I always look down at my wrist and think to myself, "what a cool watch..."

So to come full circle and back to the original point of collecting, I have come to the realization that I dig the Polar Exp II so much, that I recently started looking around at the same watch with in a black face. My rationale is that I can pop the Rubber B black with orange stripe band on that one and it will give me a fun different look of a watch that I already know I am absolutely smitten with. My handler tells me that I am out of my mind to spend $8100 (I am a patient boy and refuse to pay grey prices on pieces) on what she characterized as "the same shirt in a different color, but at a watch level."

And as all well-founded research concludes, I wanted to bring it to the court of forum opinion - if nothing more than to elicit some good banter and stories. Lend me your thoughts good people. :)

Embrace your condition ... if you will get enjoyment out of both dial colors, just the same as getting enjoyment out of a exp2 plus any other Rolex, then go for it. But if you were considering adding a diff Rolex to your collection , would think hard before making your decision.

I see nothing wrong with it, but I would look at getting a previous gen exp 2 with black dial. Then you would have two completely different watches with the same dna.

When it's good, it's good. It sounds like you've already worked through the "having two of the same watch" feeling yourself and know that you'll be able to get joy from both pieces. You have some others to unload to get the cash without needing partner sign off if she doesn't feel the same.

Full disclosure: I'm a same tee shirt in every color kind of guy.

Why not get the Explorer I instead with the matte black face? Even more variation within the same family.

My only concern is that you want the black so soon after obtaining the white.

If you had the white for some time, really gotten a sense the model demands a black companion then I would more readily endorse the pairing.

Maybe this new desire only shows the initial love is not as true as you believe.

Why don't you get the Explorer 1? It's the same yet different, and black!

Both are great. I’ve dropped the same amount on a impulse buy. So, I can’t say much.

Why not. They are both completely different looks in the same watch, as odd as it sounds.

Makes perfect sense. Black and white pair-who could not like that? I only have the polar- black dial quite appealing....
Good luck!

Nothing sane about us! Buy the black dial too if it trips your trigger. My wife just patiently rolled her eyes when I got rid of my Explorer MK1 in favor of Explorer MK2 because I like the 369 on the dial and hands better. We are fickle lot and like what we like.

It makes perfect sense to own an Explorer II in both black and white.

My Rolex collection is not quite so complete, but I do have three Orient Bambino watches that differ only in the dial and indices colors.

I do have a Rolex Date 1503 in 14K gold with a champaigne stick dial on leather and a Datejust in SS with a black stick dial on a Jubilee, though.

Watch collecting is an affair of the heart and no rationale need be given for one's choices.

That’s a great thought. Different color dial, different size.

Why stop at the Explorer II 42mm? The polar and black dial regular explorer IIs are amazing. The Explorer I in the 36mm and 39mm iterations are also amazing.

Just like Pokemon, you gotta "catch em all".

Hows that for an enabling statement? :D

Agree, you may still be in the honeymoon stage. With that being said, I find nothing wrong with getting the black dial version.

I’ve wanted to get the black dial alternate to my white for some time.
Excessive is buying the same color variant just so that you can keep one on a rubberB :)

Are you telling me you found a woman who does not own two of the same shirt in different colours?

I have the Polar. I think the black and the white are exceptionally and uniquely stylish, good looking and easy to read watches. I can see the rationale for owing both, if resources allow. I have a green ceramic Sub Date and a blue TT ceramic Sub Date. Same situation.

Actualy they are quite different. I would even say they are different watches. The white is sporty and fun. The black is more elegant and stealth.

I have both and prefer the black. WG hourmarkings and it wears (optical) a bit smaller. The white exp2 is 100% sport and great t-shirt watch on sunny days do

I grappled with that dilemma too when I bought the black steel Daytona 9 months after I got the white dial. But now I am okay. The heart wants what the heart wants
