Waiting list

Happy New Year!

I have had a few ADs take my name ask me to send them my wish list. Has anyone had any luck with this? I feel like they will never contact me.

I was able to order a new Datejust Wimbledon 41 prior to Xmas via my local AD. I was told it would be at least 6 months before I received it but still excited to have one coming eventually.

Appreciate any insight.

it really depends on your ad/sa

everyone's experiences vary. I've had a fantastic run with an AD in 2021, i got along well with the manager and the SA. Got myself a EXP 1, TT Sub, Plat DD and Black Daytona in 1 year.

make sure they know you're not a flipper, you have future purchases ahead of you etc etc and keep you front of mind when the watch comes in.

You have to remember a watch comes in they offer it and the person doesn't take it, the watch passes on to the next customer and the SA loses commission etc...

When you say order...did you put any money down?

Every AD works differently. Some have a mythical waitlist, others have real ones.

I think a DJ41 Wimbledon is a great start! My suggestion would be to acquire that watch first and then work your way up to the next model on your wish list with that AD. Relationships take purchase history and time, and I’ve come to learn that watch collecting is a marathon and not a race (especially with the hype of today’s watch market)

Purchasing a full PM or Platinum piece will drastically reduce any "wait".

Not necessarily true for all watches. Platinum DD now 6-12 months. Playtona - VIP only and several years. Full PM Sub or GMT certainly true over SS with the exception of GMT Meteorite.

If you paid in full then I would expect that you are definitely gonna get one not to worry. Post incoming when you do.

I ordered a TT DJ 41 with the Wimbledon dial back in Oct. I was told up to a 6 months wait but it took exactly 2 months to come in. I did put down a 50% deposit and was told the order was submitted direct to Rolex in Switzerland from the AD's corporate procurement office.

Is this right? You have to pay in full just to be in the waiting list? What if you have to wait 3 years?

Dealers in the US get their watches from RolexUSA, not Switzerland. Glad you got your watch but their story was just that.

seems to be something somewhat unique to the USA

in the UK for my five watches never been even asked for a deposit though offered one and it was declined

so yes, the upfront payment is an interest free loan to the AD - madness

AD's are taking the piss - any in demand watch will fly off the shelf even if you decline it when offered

Anyone paying extra large amounts of money hoping to reduce so called wait time, IMHO must have more money than sense, or be sixpence short of a shilling. And if every prospective buyer did not give in to these so called AD practise then perhaps we could all get back to normal.

I asked for a platinum daytona with diamonds for my 50th birthday this month. They said we will try our best. My total spend is 127,000 in 8 month's time. I really hope they come through in a couple of weeks.

This.

It's also going to vary by customer. An AD is unlikely to treat all it's customers exactly the same.

If you know you're on a real list and not in the bin, you are half way there. Then all you have to do is wait, and wait.....

I’ve had the manager at my AD ask me for a two piece wish list. They’ve offered me a few things not on my wish list, one of which I ended up liking and purchasing and the others I referred a few customers for. Interestingly, I really wanted a GMT and discussed how I was considering buying a Tudor GMT in the meantime and she actually steered me away from it and said promisingly “be patient” a couple months ago. Unfortunately, I’m not in a great buying position for 2022 but 2023 might be better.

I have had ADs ask for a non-refundable deposit on a datejust order...the explanation was that those watches are requested with a specific color combination. Not sure if that was BS or not, but I have never been asked for a deposit on a professional watch.
