I am in the market for a good writing utensil, what do you suggest I get? I would be in the market for something that looks good and is durable enough for daily usage in the office and out in the field (Real Estate market)......

So what do you suggest?

I have the Montblanc Meisterstucks, the small ones ("Classique", I think is the style), in black resin and platinum. I have the ballpoint with twist mechanism and the rollerball which you remove the pen cap and can place it on the other end while you are writing.

The ballpoint is very convenient to use on-the-go, you just twist a little and the tip comes out, like on a Cross pen. The rollerball, which writes incredibly smoothly and effortlessly, and makes my handwriting look better for some reason, is less convenient, but it is more elegent to use since you can remove the cap with a flourish before you write like it's a fountain pen. That might be good to use on your clients when they are signing an offer or an acceptance.

Montblanc Starwalker is about the coolest pen I own, among a bunch of Meisterstucks, all rollerball.

Bordeaux is no longer available. My (former) AD still has some left. I bought a rollerball and a matching LeGrande ballpoint for my wife. I'm saving for the mechanical pencil for myself.

What's the type of pen you want to use? fountain pen, ball pen, rollerball or pencil?
Majority of people will opt for ballpen or rollerball - as they are the most convenient ones. If you want to write with style, fountain pens - you can have so many different coloured inks, as well as different pen nibs to show your penmanship.
When it comes to pens, the equivalent to Rolex is Montblanc, and there are several good Italian brands (or craftmen) e.g. Montegrappa that are equivalent to Patek in the watch world.

So far the quintessential equivalent of Rolex sub is Montblanc 149 pen - i.e. the cigar fountain pen. It's big, fat and nobody would have missed it. However, I personally like platinum (149 only comes in gold) so I would have gone for the 146 Le Grand, which looks more modest.

If you want to pay for more exotic pens, MB's Writers' series limited edition pens are pretty good too. Good examples of pens like the 1992 Agatha Christie and 1991 Hemingway's command very high resale prices (aren't the case for later LE pens though). Of course, the next higher up collection is the Patron of the Arts series and they are like $3-4k for the pen.

As for definitive source of pens - Fountain Pen Hospital http://www.fountainpenhospital.com in NYC.

I've owned a Mont Blanc Meisterstcuck ball point pen for over 20 years and it has never let me down.

I highly recommend the brand.

I am a big fan of David Oscarson pens, they are all done in the style of Faberge (brilliant glass enamel, 18 or so layers of it!) made out of all natural materials (18kt Gold, and other gems & jewels). They are all limited edition, usually out of 88 or 128! He has been featured in the Robb Report a couple of years in a row for being the best of the best! I have met him personally and he is a very nice man who is as obsessed with pens as we are watches Each pen is hand-made in London, England. I consider them more art than pen, but, they work just as well Here are a couple of mine...

Mont Blanc is nice but getting pretty pricy for a plastic pen, refills are getting expensive too. For a nice pen that writes well and you won't be upset if you lose it is a Parker. Nice pens and refills are not so expansive that you won't want to write with it. Mont Blancs, especially the roller balls go thru ink pretty fast.

I just got a pretty good deal on a Montblanc pen. I caught a jewelry company closing a store and got a Starwalker ballpoint pen for 36% off retail. They have quite a few Meisterstuck rollerball pen left in stock if someone needs one!!!

I really like Cartier. I've used a Cartier Diabolo rollerball for the past 15 years. I'm shocked I haven't lost it yet! Fountain pens have to be refilled often so that makes them less practical for everyday use; ball pens are just dead common (in a UK sense of the word). I'm fond of the Cartier Pasha too. Pelikan makes a beautiful line of pens as well. I'm not fond of Montblanc since they seem to be in every mall luggage shop. In addition to learning not to lose your fine pen you have to be careful letting others borrow it. Even if they return it, many people don't know how to unscrew a cap on a fine pen. People try to just pull the cap off or push the cap back on. That drives pen nuts like myself mad!

On the roller ball, NEVER put the cap on the end of th pen. It was not designed to go there & you can split the resin very easily
