This is a step in the right direction and it will be interesting to see if Rolex follows suit. With that stated, it really doesn't matter how many venues there are to sell watches if the ones people want are not available.

What would be interesting is to let people submit a name to an online listing per retail outlet. Have that name correspond to a place in line on a database and you could query it to see your place. It would also generate an email alert when you're 5 from the top or something - "Get your money ready cause you're in 5th place!"

Also, if you are laid off and out of a paycheck, who is seriously going to drop 60K or more on a Patek in these times of a pandemic?

That would be great! Now it is like having to set aside 20k+ for an incoming that does not have a real timeline~

That 20k+ can be so much better utilised~

That's nice but I don't see this resulting in better availability for the hotties.

Most likely not, but hopefully a clearer picture of demand would help. And of course, provided that ADs are not selling to greys through their backdoors, AND no greys or greys with MULTIPLE registrations on that list.....

this is getting harder and harder.....

Rolex has no choice but to follow Patek’s example. Better late to the show than to miss it altogether

Maybe not but it just might give better transparency into the process. It’s flat out wrong to tell folks they’re on a waitlist when everyone knows there is no list. Only the whim of the AD

Now that I think about this more, I believe you're right. I mean we are selling cars online now...and outside of the whole demand craziness, it would provide Rolex a way to sell watches while ADs are closed when the supply/demand works itself out.

Very doubtful but could be wrong. Don’t even expect pp to be online in USA.

London Jewelers in the article, is in the USA, despite the name.

I don't think Rolex will follow suit though, they are far too stubborn.

“There are limits to the new way of working, and customers should not expect to find any steel Nautilus or Aquanaut watches online”.

This is not manufacturer direct to consumer sales. This is AD to consumer sales. Yet to be seen the long term effect of this but every AD could now be selling outside their territory and that could become an issue across the AD network. We will see.

its still through a dealer though, would be more interesting if they started selling direct. Wonder if we see Tudor doing this.

I’m not sure it will continue after this either. It’s to help all parties - AD’s can lower their inventories, then distributors can sell more, the PP manufacturing can make the backlog when reopen. Essentially liquidating the assets during closing periods.

That is, if they sell any.

Pretty sure this is only while stores are closed to sell shop stock pieces and keep some turnover coming in. Expect the status quo to return.

Imagine the fastest clicker will get the just published 5711 and 5740! Will need to stare and refresh the AD site full time now.

Anything to help business continue in this mess but in normal circumstances I don’t think it’s a way I would like to purchase such a premium item. The boutique experience is a big part of a prestige purchase for me, timepieces, fashion, jewelry, etc. and it works both ways...a bad boutique experience can really put me off an entire brand.

Plus we don’t want to get into a situation like with Supreme drops where scalpers use bots to snap everything up in seconds then turn around and list it on StockX at 3 times the price!

Yes, these are luxury purchases and most people savour the luxury, pampered experience, which has been so marginalised in these hype days, but once things return to normal there should be more stress put back on the customer and serving them rather than themselves.

Oh, please. This doesn't mean a thing other than essentially adding ADs to the list of grey market dealers selling online only, perhaps, at higher prices and with a "no returns" policy.

More dealers, showrooms, and staff put out of business, and more reason for people to sit around on their couch, never seeing the sunshine.
