Westerns

Watching Tombstone, for God knows how many times now, but many heavy hitters in this film and is one of my all time favorites. Silverado may be equal to this one, but this genre goes back many years. Clint and and all his are up there too.

What say you?

At one time I rather liked some of them.

Now I mostly find them mythological Americana that unfortunately many people thought was actual history.

Interestedly one of the biggest box office bombs of all time was rather accurate and good.

Heaven’s Gate.

I generally prefer the Spaghetti Westerns, especially the Leone films, but some classics in the collection here, too, like The Big Trail (1930 - John Wayne's first starring role and a very early widescreen presentation with stunning visuals) and The Iron Horse.

Love your short list, three of my favorites. I would add True Grit, Shane, Fort Apache and the Seekers.

Silverado is super.

But loving Forsaken lately. A truly good movie with a great story and great acting.

Too many to mention. But besides some of those mentioned really like the older movies as well as those with Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, and John Wayne. Grew up on Westerns and still watch them to this day.

Among modern westerns, Open Range is pretty damned good.

The Wild Bunch is the one in my opinion. That movie is so good.

It has everything, from an amazing cast to a good and fun and exciting story that doesn't feel slow or boring.

I just noticed Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail is available on Youtube if anyone is interested to see what the first widescreen Western looked like in 1930. Just the opening scenes are well worth a look.

Has anyone ever noticed that in most westerns the sky is always so blue? I love that about western films in general.

I neglected to add Unforgiven, Dances with Wolves and of course Blazing Saddles to my list. There are others that allude me right now.

Two of my favorites. And, of course, all of Clint Eastwood's take on the genre.

Howdy,

Wow, I can't believe "Shane" is not on the list. I had my sixteen year old daughter watch it for the first time a couple months ago and she really liked it. It still holds up great by today's standards and is Alan Ladd's best role by far.

And yes, Shane lives in in the end so DON'T go there.

Take care,

Ruddiger

PS-Much preferred Costner's Wyatt Earp to Tombstone but to each his own.
